Well...I was a bad mommy tonight and clipped Kahlua's one pinky nail on her back foot too short. It bled and bled. I felt so bad! I cuddled her and tried to make her feel better. She started whimpering like a puppy. I have never heard a hedgie make that kind of sound before. It just tore at my heart. I felt so bad for her. I tried putting flour mixed w/ water on it, but she wouldn't let me near it. The bleeding has stopped now. I feel so bad!!!

Oh, I think we've all done that! :( Try not to feel too bad, but I know it's hard!

When I cut Lucy's nail too short, I had her walk thru cornstarch. She wouldn't let me touch her foot, so I just placed her on a paper plate with some cornstarch on it. She walked thru it.

aww. dont worry. it broke my heart the first time i had cut Kazz's nail a lil too short. he was ok in the end though. and when back in his cage he was so happy to see his wheel again!
its happened with lily too. usually i can clip the nails with some hassle but no blood, but you just cant help if they happen to jump or tug the moment you are about to clip the nail, ya know?

I've made the same mistake with both my boys, although neither of them really bled. There was just the tiniest pinprick of blood, and Edmund was too polite to even show I'd hurt him. Vincent, on the other hand, freaked out and made the same sound your girl did. They both wound up getting their 'injured' foot all caked white with flour. Looked like some horrible, life-threatening disease!

That's exactally what happened Keeja.....just about done and at the last minute she tugged and I clipped.....and she pulled her foot up to her tummy that I couldn't even see it to see how bad it was....she just sat there whimpering. Poor girlie :cry2:

They make a product called Kwik-stop (sp?) for use on birds' and other critter toenails. It works great. The other day, I put it on a cut on my finger that wouldn't stop bleeding and it even worked on me! It also has a built-in painkiller which helps. Now I can speak from personal experience!

Yep, I have had cockatoos, guinea pigs and now hedgies who all have bled when I clipped their nails. I kept kwik stop in the house when I had my birds because birds bleed to death really rapidly and you have to stop their bleeding rapidly. Kwik stop works great and I keep it next to me when cutting nails so if one starts bleeding I can dip the foot in the kwik stop while I still have a hold of it.

Aww the whimpering noise makes me feel so bad too. :( Luna only did it once and it was the second day we had her. I took her hidey house out to clean it and I guess she got scared from not having anything to hide under so she whimpered at me. I felt sooo bad.

Now I can speak from personal experience!Melody, did it sting? There was an old thread discussing what was best to use for HH bleeding and there was a mention about both a styptic pencil and QuickStop (or Kwik-stop?) having some ingredients that "burn" or sting badly. Did you find it OK to use on HHs or any other animals?

Oh, I almost forgot... groovychic, I'm so sorry that Kahlua was hurt, but I'm sure she knows you didn't mean to hurt her and I'm almost certain that she has already forgiven you. Big hugs to Kahlua.
