I have a co-worker who has been telling me about his friend who wants a chinchilla. I've told him to have his friend contact me. Come see our chin room & learn what it really takes. He just told me his friend has a ferret! I've already made my mind up. I just want to know what most of you think.
Thanks,

My first reaction was he11 no! But if the person is willing to take all the neccessary precautions it *could* work. It just depends on the person. I will never have ferrets in my house as long as my chins live, because I would never risk there lives. I know of some people who have ferrets and chins in seperate rooms, and keep the ferret cages double padlocked, it all depends on if you trust the person.
If it was me though, and my chins I wouldn't.

Thank you for your reply. It was the same as mine. The offer still stands for her to come to our house, see our chin room & learn what i takes. BUT, I'm not willing to let one of my babies move into a home like that. And & do understand that some people here have both. And I have not met with this person or talked with her. BUT what type of safe guards could a person put up that would make you feel OK?
None, no ferrets and chins.

I agree with Dawn. There just aren't enough safe guards that would make it worth it to me to have ferrets in the house. I have nothing against ferrets, but I think putting that kind of predator around rodents is just a bad idea. Even with all the safety precautions in the world, there is still human error - doors left partially latched, ferret room door left open, chin room door left open. All I can do is think about that lady in Washington that had half her chins destroyed by her ferrets when they accidentally got in the chin area. They ripped through the cages, runs, whatever until they could get to the chins. I can't imagine the terror those chins must have felt. *shudders*

into a home like that.
Firstly what exactly is "a home like that"? I think that this is terribly stereotyping. I had a ferret, he was never padlocked in his cage and never got out. I personally, would think it would depend on the person's cage arrangements and housing arrangments. To say you won't sell to a person just because they have a ferret is no different than saying you won't sell to someone who has a big snake, or a dog, because dogs are predetors too. It's the same way that people won't rent to people with pitbulls and such. I'm not saying that a ferret wouldn't attack a chin, I'm saying that before putting everyone in a box you should see what they're like.
No matter what anyone thinks you have to do what you feel comfortable with, but honestly I big dog who really wants to eat a chin can tear through a cage in less than a minute, but I've never heard anyone say I won't sell chins to someone with a dog.
Just MO
I have to say that I wouldnt either. A person could tell me that they are knowledgeable and will take the necessary precautions to make sure nothing happens, but nothing is guaranteed.
If something happened to the chin I would blame myself.

can definately tell this is the debate section.. lol
hmm.. tough one imo.. i guess i'm thankful there are people out there that will sell to multiple pet home's.. cause i know me.. and i CAN keep species seperated.. do these people have kids??? do they have a totally seperate room for keeping seperate pet's??
it is your decision.. your chin's.. but give everyone an equal chance before rushing to judgement..

I'm a little torn because I used to own ferrets myself and they never once lived anywhere near or in the same building/house as my chins, so of course my chins were safe from them. Also the first breeder I purchased chins from on the island here, owned and bred ferrets too and had them in a separate building from their chins on their farm.
I personally think it depends on the housing arrangements. If the ferret isn't even in the house, or going to be in the same building as the chin, then I don't see why it would be a bad idea, as long as the person is educated to know that they should never be put together or left together.
I do feel however if they own a ferret and plan to have them living under the same roof(in the same house I mean) with a chinchilla, that no I would not sell to them. Because there is too much risk there.
