I just phoned the SPCA as my hedgie Irwin was supposed to be out of foster care today. They told me he is now going to be in foster care for two more weeks! I don't want to wait any more... I want him now! :tantrum:

Why has he had to be in foster care for so long? How old is he??

I'm so sorry to hear that!

Vincent was supposed to be a birthday present, and on my birthday, we went to every pet store we could find in the phone book. It was ridiculous! Everyone was like, "Well, we just had a TON of hedgehogs, but I guess they sold fast."
I had to wait a month and a half for my baby, so I feel your pain. Why is he in foster care for so long, though?

The SPCA told me that when he was turned in to them, he had a scabby belly and some cuts on his feet. I have no idea why that would require four weeks of foster care! They seem quite unwilling to provide me with any further details regarding his medical condition, for some reason. When I finally get him, I will insist on being given his complete medical history, and he will be going to my exotics vet for a thorough checkup. I can't imagine what sort of medical problem could be taking this long to treat! The SPCA told me that he is about two years old, but they also told me that he is a Eurasian hedgehog (he's an African pygmy) and that he is a S&P (unlikely, from what I've read), so I'm taking that with a grain of salt. :dunno: I hope the people who are fostering him are knowledgeable about hedgehogs and are providing him with everything he needs. I've never even met the little fella, and I'm so worried about him. :( I just want him to come home with me so I can spoil him rotten!

I hate to say this but I wonder if one of the HS workers has decided they want him and they are just stringing you along hoping you'll give up. Four weeks is a long time. Something doesn't sound right.

It sounds to me like they don't want to give him up. He should be healed enough to come home. You can be taught to do any treatment he has less. I think they don't want to move him from where he is.

If he's being treated for mites the traditional way with Ivermectin, it's six weeks; three treatments two weeks apart with a two week waiting period to ensure that it worked. So not all that long.

UGH, I never thought of Ivermectin treatments.
