I was wondering how much food is a proper portion to feed your hedgehog.
Thankies in advance,
Reggie's Mom :bananadance:

I free feed my hedgies-They always have dry kibble available to them. Their bowls hold about 1/4 cup and there are usually a few pieces of kibble leftover each morning

I've never heard of restricting a hedgehog's food supply. :) They know how much they want to eat, and if you're giving them the right food, there should be no problems. My boys always have a full food dish, and like to wake up a few times during the day to have a snack.

I had to make a restriction because Reggie was so overweight. So right now I'm feeding him 1 tablespoon of Royal Canin light 37.

I think 1 table spoon might be too much of a restriction... I've heard most people give theirs roughly two tablespoons and have a few pieces left over, but it also depends on the hedgie... I'd give at least 1.5... but I dunno...

There are better ways to help an overweight hog loose weight than by restricting their food. Exercise is the best. Enlarge his cage if possible. Put a little bit of kibble in his dish then hide the rest around the cage so he is forced to walk around to find it. You can offer veggies first so he fills up a bit on the veggies and then won't want as much kibble. If he isn't already, switch to a low fat diet. Often that alone will get rid of some of the weight.

Every night, re-arrange his cage and dishes and where you hide the food. Take him out for lots of free run time. :)

(about 1 to 4 Tbsp.)
...
Oh I only remember seeing the bottom part about the "example"

So should I put 1 tablespoon in his bowl tonight and then hide another tablespoon?

I feel really bad now.. like I've been starving Reggie:(:(:(

Right now his in a big rubbermaid container. I'll ask my parents if I can get a bigger one soon. But I'll probably have to pay for it.

Luna and Isis always have a full dish and they only eat as much as they need and it's not really alot. Although every morning I wake up to see Luna has flung hers all over the cage.
