View Full Version : Freeze-dried crickets...
My hubby opened the can of crickets and my eyes were watering from gagging, then he was gagging and coughing. It took more than two hours to clear the room of the stinch! Bleck! For those of you that buy them, do your hedgies eat the whole thing? Buford only ate the head and left the rest which I had to pick up with a piece of toilet paper while gagging. I think I'll get live ones from now on.

Hmmm....my freeze dried ones don't have an odor at all. They came in a plastic bottle that resembles a cinnamon or spice bottle. They seem to be just dry, hard, crickets. Is it possible you got a bad can?
As for how much Stewie eats...good question. He takes them into his Pigloo to eat in privacy... Occasionally I'll find a bit or part mixed in with his bedding when I change it, but he seems to eat the whole cricket.
I threw the can out, couldn't stand the smell. The crickets were still juicy. They came in a metal can, cost $11 for the darn things.

You are talking about two different types of crickets. There are the freeze dried which are dry crickets. No smell.
The others are crickets in their own juices. Kind of like can-o-worms only for crickets. They stink to high heaven.

Yeah the can o crickets stink, but my freeze dried don't smell at all. I don't think they were that expensive either, but theycould be different sizes. Mine eats the whole thing, not one piece of cricket left when he's done...
Well then, I'm going to have to try the freeze-dried ones. It's bad enough with the can of mealworms! I was eating a chicken salad with wild rice in it, and then I occurred to me that the rice somewhat resembled the mealworms, needless to say I couldn't eat it after that. Oh, the things our little ones get us into!

Ha! I'd probably still eat the salad... I have the tendency to be talking at lunch about when I saw a dogs surgery or something of that sort and I can still eat but no one else can. It's so funny. Mmmm mealworm salad!!!

I had the Exo Terra brand crickets for Spiny. (Spiny says "yuck!"). And they were pretty gross too. He either ignored them or was scared of it. hee hee
