I've had hedgie for a little over a month now and he has taken his time to come around. This morning I heard him playing in his cage but didn't want to turn on the light as that usually makes him stop and crawl into his hedgie bag. When I got up I saw something on the inside TOP of his cage... poo! There was a bit of poo stuck between the powder coat wire bars the rest of the deposit was right below. I didn't even think he was a climber! Now I wish I would have turned on a small light to see him upside down.

If he has a wheel it very possibly flung off the wheel and stuck. That stuff is like superglue.
Yes hedgehogs are great climbers... up, down usually results in a fall. I've never heard of them them being able to walk hanging from the bars of the cage. If that is infact what he was doing, I'd block off the lower bars so he is unable to climb. A fall can result in broken bones, spinal injuries and internal injuries.

Thanks Nancy ~ I thought I'd post a cute poo story but hadn't taken in the consequence of injury due to a fall! yikes :scared: He did not have his wheel in his cage last night so he must have been upside down! I have been having some serious cage issues and the cage I was sold (grrr dumb pet store) is not high enough for a 12" wheel. I am looking for a 96qt sterlite which will accomodate the larger wheel. Hopefully he will not be able to climb in that!

Wow, that little guy is amazing. Some of them can climb the sterlites. Well not the sterlite but they can push their wheels or furniture over to climb and get out. If he is that good of a climber you will want a lid on that sterlite.
What type of cage do you have? Maybe there is a way to alter it. Or can you return it since they sold you the wrong one.

Oh, forgot to add. That poo storey even rivals Smokey who can poop 5" up the side of his cage. Solid walls, no wheel nearby. I'd love to catch him doing that.

My cage is 1/2 solid plastic (about the first 5 inches) and then the powder coat wire that clips on over that for a total of 11.5" high. (30x18 are the LxW). I was thinking of getting taller powder coat wire (I saw the "playpen" enclosure for $10 at walmart) and using that to replace the removeable powder coat that my cage has. I won't be doing this if he is going to climb that high! I can't take it back as the pet store is hours away (I got him over the summer near where my folks/I used to live. I thought the sterlite would also be good for the winter - less drafty.
Now that would be a sight! A hedgie hanging upside down! LOL, oh the mental picture.

I have seen my Herbie climb the side of his cage and hang from the roof. I reach in and get him down. He has not done that in a long time now but when he was around 4 months old he was really good at it. I have found him standing on top of his wheel too. He is definitely an explorer kind of guy.
