Paper towels work great or a pillow case. Just make sure there are no loose threads that tiny toes can get caught in. :)

I take it you're on wood shavings? If so, I'd switch to liners. They are just fleece cut to the demensions of the cage, or you can buy some from someone who makes them, and you never have to go out to buy more again! Just make 3 or 4 and put them in the wash when they're dirty! And they are healthier as woods shavings can harbor mites, cause respiratory problems, and stuff like that.

I use Critter Care bedding that you get at Wal Mart. Hotaru loves to burrow and dig in it, and all it is is recycled paper, so its safe to use with no dangerous smells or anything.

I use fleece now for my girls ever since Isis got the sneezes from her shavings. It's sooo much easier and it cuts cage cleaning time by alot.

It's also really nice to be able to pick your hog up without them being covered in shavings and having the shavings go down your shirt, on the floor and throughout the entire house.

I use liners that I sewed myself using cotton / fleece and I love it. It's not messy at all and I find it quite easy to keep the cage clean as you just pick the poo up off the liner and voila, a neat and tidy looking cage again!

I hope to adopt a hedgy in the very near future and enjoy reading everyones comments and suggestions. As far as bedding (fleece) doesn't it get wet and smell of urine?

I made some vellux linings (I found a GREAT deal on vellux throws on Ebay) and if you catch it fast enough the pee doesn't soak in right away. If it does soak in you can dab at it with a paper towel or sponge to get out the excess and it doesn't seem to smell particularly for a couple of days (luckily mine at least recognizes that the litter box has some purpose... sometimes). I got six liners out of one vellux throw and it seems like I can go a couple of days between changing the lining, at which point I just throw it in the wash with dye/perfume free detergent.
