I'm glad I found this forum, because up until I did, I was convinced that Saskatchewan was a giant hedgehog void! All of the sites I looked at had listings for hedgehog owners and breeders in all of the other prairie provinces, but there wasn't a single listing for SK. With winter coming on, I'm not so inclined to try shipping a hedgehog into our province of snow and ice (ok, ok, so it's not that bad... yet!), and would rather go and pick up my new little cutie, especially since that means I can see how well socialized they are before I bring them home.

After a solid month of searching and months and months of research, I finally managed to find a few listings for hedgehogs in Saskatchewan. The first was a real disaster! It took her forever to reply to me, and then when she did, it was a solid barrage of questions to try and see how much I knew about hedgehogs. I understanding wanting to make sure your hogs going to a responsible owner, but it's a little hard to take someone seriously when they're emailing you with 'wh4t u know about ano1nting? cn u spen time to make them not bte?'. After playing along as best as I could, (there were some sentences that I just couldn't decipher!) it turned out that someone had already bought her hog, if indeed she had ever had one and wasn't just stringing me along.

There were several other leads that just didn't pan out, until I finally found an adult hog who needed a new home. I talked with the owner, got lots and lots of pictures (he was a real cutie on camera!), and was reasonably assured that the owner had socialized him well. He came with his cage and most supplies, but I made sure to stock up on fleece, worms, and a few other things he didn't have. All that was left was to go down and meet him... I anxiously browsed the forums, making sure I'd have everything ready for him to come home.

Then, this weekend, I finally got to meet him. I was, sadly, disappointed. As soon as we entered the room, he turned into a hissing, popping ball of quills! He stayed that way almost the whole time I was there, and would pop any time we moved. The owner was a little embarassed, and said he wasn't usually like this. I stayed, hoping he would calm down a little, but no amount of coaxing was going to calm him down. Finally, I tried stroking his quills to get him to relax and unball. After a while, he did, but it was only to whirl on me and grab my finger in his little teeth! I didn't think they could move that fast, but before I knew it, he'd chomped down on my pinkie and had rolled back into a ball, leaving me to try to figure out how to get my finger both out of his mouth and out of the ball of quills without hurting him or me!

Needless to say, I didn't bring him home with me. And so, my search continues. I'm going to start looking for breeders in neighboring provinces, and hopefully I'll have more luck there. Anyway, that's my story. Sorry for the super long post!! Did anyone else have this much trouble finding a hedgie, or is it just a SK thing?

Hey, FINALLY! Another Saskatchewan member! *High-five!* I was beginning to think I was the only one! Lol!

I've had no luck with Saskatchewan hedgehog breeders. My first hog, Vincent, came from a pet store in Regina. He was (and still is, for the most part) as unsocial as the adult hog that you mentioned. I love the little guy to death, but he isn't exactly most people's idea of a "sweet pet".

My second hedgie, Edmund, came from a breeder in Red Deer. I think that, since Manitoba seems to lack breeders as badly as Saskatchewan, our only option is to go to Alberta and look. However, pet store vs. breeder is a total no-brainer. If you can find someone who's good at what they do, it's worth the long wait and drive. :) Edmund is the sweetest thing.

Man. I am so hyped about finding another person in Saskatchewan. Lol! :D

Yay, Saskatchewanians! (Saskatchewaners? Man, our province has the wierdest plurals...)

Yeah, it seems that Alberta is the best option, though I've been speaking with a breeder in Manitoba who might be willing to ship. Still, I usually go to Edmonton a couple times a year to visit family, so if I can find a good breeder there, it'd be no problem to make a special trip to go pick up a cute little hoglet. After meeting the little grump down in Regina, I'm inclined towards finding a hog who's been well handled and socialized!

Hardest province to spell, easiest to draw. Lol!

Shipping in the winter might be difficult, what with the temperatures and the possibility of the hedgie hibernating. At least, that's what I've heard. There's a user on here named Hemi_mygirl who lives in Edmonton, and might be able to point you to some breeders in the area.

Aww... that's sad :(
Well, I know that you want a nice, well-behaved hedgehog, (and I don't blame you), I can't help but feel sorry for the little guy. I mean, he just needs someone to spend more time with him and tell him that they love him.
I would put the word out to anyone you know that has experience with hh's that this little guy is out there and in need of some care
I hope that your search is successfull though! And, I hope that you find a hh that is as well-behaved as Spiny!!
Luck!

Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that! Lol! Silly me. :p
If your friend really needs to get rid of his hedgehog, I'm sure something could be arranged. I only live two hours away from him. Do you know if the hedgie is still available and how I could contact him?

Yeah, if this wasn't my first hog I'm sure I would have snatched him up in an instant, but I wasn't sure I'd be the best one to try and bring him around. I'm glad to hear that there's more interest, since I felt pretty bad about leaving him there. The whole reason his owner was getting rid of him was because she didn't have enough time to spend with him (hence, the grouchiness...).

I don't know if he's still available, but the owner's ad on the Hedgehog Central forums is still there. Here's the link (http://hedgehogcentral.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2029). Hope he finds a good home, and someone to give him some love!

Ooh, thanks for the link! :) I contacted her, so I guess I'll learn soon enough whether he's already been adopted or not.

Here's a small update.

I emailed the owner, and she says that Helmet (the hedgehog) is still looking for a home. My dad's already said "yes", and I should know by the end of the week whether or not I'm allowed to adopt this little cutie. :) I'm so excited!
