Hi,

I need some advice please : )

Here is my situation. I have a hedgehog that I got into rescue. It was being fed a dry kibble diet of Trader Joe's Premium Chicken Cat Food (protein 30% min, fat 18% min and 3% fiber). I know the fat is way too high and the fiber should be higher at around 8%. I have been slowly changing over to Royal Canin Light 37 Cat food then was going to introduce another high quality cat food that meets the three requirements for protein (higher than 30%), fat (lower than 10%-the lower the better) and fiber around 8%.

I have come across someone who is interested in adopting the hedgehog. I offered her a bag of the Royal Canin food included in the adoption fee. She mentioned that her exotic pet veterinarian recommends Pretty Pets hedgehog food over any of the cat foods including Royal Canin because cat foods are higher in fat and expensive.

Here is the information on Pretty Pets found on their website:

This food contains 32% protein, 6% fat and can be used for both pets and breeder animals. This food has interesting shapes and flavors that hedgehogs really love. Everything necessary for good health is included.

INGREDIENTS:
Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Poultry Meal, Oats, Beet Pulp Fiber, Potato Protein, Wheat Isolate, Calcium Carbonate, Dicalcium Phosphate, Coconut Oil, Soya Oil, sodium Bicarbonate, Choline Chloride, L-Lysine, DL Methionine, Vitamin E Supplement, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Ferrous Sulfate, D-Biotin, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Zinc Oxide, Manganous Oxide, Niacinamide, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Mixed Tocopherols, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Beta Carotene, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Sodium Selenite, Folic Acid, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Menadione Dimethylpyrimidinol Bisulfite (source of Vitamin K3), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Cobalt Sulfate, Rosemary Extract.

Guaranteed Analysis:
Crude Protein (min) 32%, Crude Fat/Oil (min) 5 %, Crude Fiber (max) 6 %, Moisture (max) 10 %, Ash (max) 4 %, Vitamin A (min) 17,500 IU/kg, Vitamin D3 (min) 800 IU/kg, Vitamin E (min) 200 IU/kg, Copper (min) 10 mg/kg.

I realize that vets recommend Science Diet as the best cat/dog food and it is not the case because of fillers and animal-by-products. However, it looks to this person that by suggesting she not use Pretty Pets, that I'm contradicting a professional and an expert in exotic pets such as Hedgehogs. By looking at the ingredients in Pretty Pets it appears to meet the requirements for protein, fat and fiber. Can you help me understand why the ingredients in Pretty Pets for Hedgehogs is not a good diet? What else am I missing? :banghead: Is it that protein is not the first ingredient?

Look at the ingredients. First two are corn and corn gluten meal. There is only one meat in the whole list of ingredients, poultry meal. Tell her that breeders and pet owners alike have found their hedgehogs are happier and healthier (meaning less emergency vet trips) than those fed "hedgehog" food. If she is not interested in feeding the hedgie the proper food, then I'd refuse to let her have one. Also, Pretty Pets is like $9 for 3 pounds, where with cat food you can get almost twice that. Why pay more for a worse product?

Pretty Pets is overpriced crap. I had a few hedgies that came to me on that stuff and they weren't eating well then. When I transferred them over to my mix of low fat high quality cat foods, they never looked back. They had shinier quills, their skin was in better shape, they were more active, etc.

Also keep in mind, nutrition is a very short "chapter" in a vet's 4 years in vet school. Of course they are going to recommend a product that is made for hedgehogs, but there are a lot of products in the pet market that are not safe or healthy at all for a number of animals

If you look at the first five ingredients, you have one source of protein (chicken meal- which is a fine and acceptable source of protein) and 2 forms of corn. Corn is cheap and not very digestible by most animals.
I know there are a lot of people who feed a hedgehog specific food as part of a mix.
The thing with hedgehog nutrition is that we do not know enough about what they really should be getting. By mixing a few high quality foods, we hope that we are covering what they need and this is in addition to insects, fruits, veggies and lean meats

Hmmmmm ....... looking at the Royal Canin bag, corn is the second ingredient, then wheat gluten, and corn gluten meal is the forth .......

I agree that corn is not easy to digest but they both have corn in the top 5 ingredients??

Okay, I can see RC has more protein sources and I figured having protein as the first ingredient was a good thing :)

Is there anything else about the two?

Thanks. I appreciate your comments : )

I don't understand the feeding of RC. Unless it's a food that has changed it's name, I've never recommended it. It misses on the two major points in picking kibble. it's not made from human grade ingredients and it's too high in fillers.

Felidae, Solid Gold, Innova, Wellness, CSCLS are all made from human grade ingredients. If they don't say 'human grade', then it's the dead, diseased and dying animals they use as a meat source.

My hedgie came to me on a diet of Pretty pets exclusively she seems very healthy shiny quills very little if any flaking / dry skin and she is going through her 12 week quilling right now , but I am adding chicken soup and innova to her mix, we have a new pet food store that opened and she is very interested in hedgehogs and told me that if I found a food I like and she don't carry she will carry it for me, she spent about an hour with me going through food ingrediants and analysis to find good ones, even ones she didnt carry she was looking up I tod her I was feeding a hedgehog she of course said she has seen a hedgehog food ( but don't have it) I explained the whole filler thing vs wholesomeingrediants and she completely understood I think if you can explain something with out sounding like your pushing most people will agree looking at the common sense side of things.
sorry so long and all the misspelled words
Mary

Well, yeah, that may be true, but I think RC is the one of the better cat food you can get from a chain pet store like Petco or Petsmart. If all you have withing 30 miles is a petsmart, then Royal Canin and Blue Buffalo mix is better than whatever else they got in there.

Most Petcos and Petsmarts sell Natural choice, which is a MUCH better food than RC. And it's made from Human Grade ingredients.

Well I got Royal Canin because it was on the "to do and not to do food list" on another thread. And so many people mentioned using it in their hedgehog food mix along with CSFCLS (hope that's right).

I was using Felidae but after noticing the fat content was 20% and the fiber was only 2.5% I stopped using it.

I'm going to look into Natural Choice. Thanks : )

I use RC in my mix when I can find it because it boosts the fiber content and the majority of my crew will eat it in addition to the grape nuts I add. It's the only "mediocre" food of my mix

Natural Balance was a little too rich for my kids but I know others use it with no problems
