Okay, well, I bought a fairly big cage for my shortly-arriving hedgie. I was planning on building a wheel myself, and I had all the parts except the rollers (which are impossible to find!!!). I live in a really small town, so I didnt expect to find anything anywhere. Well, I went to a pet store in town, and it was closing! (I was going to see if they had any good cat food on sale) And when we were there, I saw a wheel! Looking closer, it was only $9! It's a 12inch wheel, but thats not the problem. I also found an igloo that was on for $5. So on impulse, I bought both. Coming home, I went to go rearrange hedgie's new furniture, and the igloo is TOO big. I'm wondering if he'll enjoy it just as much if it was a play time toy, that he could hide in during outside-the-cage play time? And also, what else can I put in his cage for him to hid in to replace an igloo? Maybe I just had too big of an igloo? What size should a shelter/hidey place be for my hedgie? Would a hedgie bag be enough for him? Or do they usually prefer igloos with blankets inside? Only a week left! Calling tomorrow to chat, any questions I should ask? (since I was so excited about getting one the first time i talked to the breeder, I forgot to ask ANY questions! eep!)

On a side note... have any of you seen the harness and leashes for your mice and hamsters in stores?! It's hilarious. So tiny!

Is the igloo round or oval? The round one is the standard hedgie sized igloo, and the oval-ish one is bigger and more for rabbits and such. A hedgie bag usually suffices, and mine usually sleeps under the liners in the middle of the cage, but he has been known to be in his hedgie bag under the liners in the igloo. How big is the cage? If possible you could attache a sterilite bin via pvc pipe to make another area for more space...

I've seen leashes for hammies, and I'm like what's the point? Just make a hammy safe room and let them run around free!!!

A hedgie bag should suffice. Since Hemi got hers in July or so of 2005, she refuses to sleep in anything else. I've offered her hidey houses while I wash her bag, but she just sits and hisses until I give her the bag back, or my hoodie. That's a decent temporary replacement, I guess.

What you could do is go to a home improvement store and pick up a length of PVC pipe, 4-inch diameter. That would be used as a hidey house, just put a blanket or something inside. Shoeboxes and tissue boxes work well too.

So my question is you can put a leash on a hh  I couldn't even imagine putting one on Pika. After all she is a little princess and would look at me like why are you even attempting to do this to royality.

Not knowing in advance which hedgehog I'd be taking home with me (as I knew at the time there would be three for me to choose from) - I purchased supplies a few days before I went to pick up Honey - figuring I could return anything I didn't need. One of those things, was an igloo. Like you, I found the igloo far too large for the size of Honey's cage (especially with the wheel in there!).

So Honey sleeps in her hedgebag... and we use the igloo for playtime.

It works for us. :)

My Harley has an igloo and 2 hedgie bags in his cage and still insists on sleeping in his plastic dryer tube! haha

Oh, I would love to promote hedgiebags!!!
Spiny loves his!

Well, I have a funny story about that actually. When we first got the hedgie bag, Spiny was terrified of it. I had to put him in his carrier so that i could clean out his house. And (this was after a couple of hours of getting used to the hedgiebag in a neutral place) I put him in the carrier with the hedgie bag. He was SO TERRIFIED! He had about 1-2 inches btw the hedgie bag and the opeining of the carrier where he hid and tried to scratch his was out so that he didn't have to look at the hedgie bag.
Now though, he loves his hedgie bag and will take a fit if it's not in his house. He starts to wheel in the middle of the day (probably thinking he's running to his hedgie bag~!) because of the stress of not having his little warm hiding spot!

He's soo cute!

My boys sleep in a toasty tent which is similar to a hedgie bag. I have an igloo in their play pen so they can hide if they want. They either sleep in the tents or burrow under their wheels. silly boys!

That's cute. What a silly boy. It's funny though that some of them immediately go into hedgie bags. Others look at them with suspicion. Crazy hedgehogs.

Stewie sleeps in his hedgebag (or under it, like a blanket, in the summertime) inside his pigloo. He gets MAD if he doesn't have both....
