Does anyone make Bento lunches?
I make them for work. Or I did. lol I quit yesterday and will be looking again in a month or so (medical issues). I found them a great way t watch what i eat and the calories.

I make them for my boyfriend to take to work. :) I made sure to get several nice lunch boxes when I was in Japan and they've proved very useful. I generally try to mix it up and not really do the really involved Japanese versions, but I make sushi sandwhiches and octodogs and mac and cheese and stuff for him in the little boxes.

Wow. been a long time since I've had a real o-bento... my mom used to do them for me when I was in grade school. I have a box for o-bento, but I don't use it much... it's so mendo-kusai to make onigiri (which to me is the whole point of o-bento :P), and I rarely do any real Japanese cooking...

I had never heard of bento until I saw your post and did a little search - it certainly sounds like the way I pack my daughters lunch when she goes to the sitter (she's just a year) I 've got all these tiny size plastic containers and fill them with cut up bits of healthy yummy food for her (no sushi  ) - Every night before we eat dinner I am preparing her stuff for the next day - yogurt, cantalope, cheese, veg, meat - she gets it all. I'd love to have one of those cute bento boxes but I guess what I have works too.

Bento doesn't necessarly have to be a Japanese/sushi lunch-- bento actually stands for boxed lunch-- so it can include anything-- if you actually think of it a Happy meal is a bosed lunch-- LOL-- but the japanese/sushi ones are definetly the best!! I make bento lunches all the time for work-- its the easiest and healthiest eay to eat when im at work!! and definetly cheeper and way tastier than buying my lunch while im at work!! My favorite bento lunches are the Cutesy ones!where all the food looks liek soemthing and is super cute-- my mom used to make them for me when i was young (shaped sandwhiches, coloured/shaped eggs, all that cute stuff ;) )
and in the season-- I just had to share this picture i found for a halloween bento lunch-- http://www.lastplace.com/Halloween/scary_bento.jpg

Until last week when I saw them on the Rachel Ray show I had never heard of them. I was SOOOOO like "what in the world is bento"? Now I realize I sort of make them for my daughter. I have a few Starfrit Snap N Go containers. One fits half a sandwich (or other stuff) and the other is the same size but has 3 compartments. That has been my daughter's lunch kit stuff for over a year now. So I guess I'm a bento box mom. LOL

The ones the Japanese make are so involved, I mainly just cheat and buy an already prepaired one at the market in the morning, otherwise it'd take me hours! Even just to clean each little container and soy sauce holder! It's basically and artform, colors and foods are specifically chosen to be appealing to the eye and tummy.

There's a nice Asian restaurant in my area (Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai) that does bento-style lunches. I like that option as I get to try a few pieces of different cuisines/ styles at once.
I'm actually getting myself some sort of tiffin-style container to bring Indian food (my FAVORITE) to and from work for dinner. Tupperware makes a stackable lunch kit that vaguely resembles the tiffin boxes!
