How much would you expect or want to pay for an online based chin registry program?

A program that would allow your track your animals, breedings, etc, much like Evans or ChinRec, etc. but would have continual updates, options for user input for new features that could all be implemented without having to buy an upgrade.

It would have the option to allow public viewing of pedigrees and chin information, a great resource for selling animals! Simple direct people to the proper page and all the information is right there, no repeating questions, sending pedigrees who people who might buy, but might not...
If you a sell a chin to another user you can simply transfer that record, if they do not then you can simply e-mail it to the new buyer! Easy to print as well. You will also be able to print individual cage cards.

Payment options will probably be offered in one year, three year, and five year options.

That is a wonderful Idea! If maintained, it could allow access to pedigrees for a dozen generations. It could keep track of show results, mutations and possibly help pinpoint what lines might be most susceptible to malocclusions. I’m in!

I think it should be a set initial cost (like $15 or so) and then an additional cost for each chin after that ($.50, $1.00, etc.)

The problem with that- there are people who use things like this that have several hundred chins... Even with 60 chins- to pay $60 to enter them into the database + yearly costs + more money as I expand, and have kits born-- I wouldn't want to do it. For someone who has maybe 5 chins, no problem. But the people with 200+...Thats a lot of money.

I think it would be a great idea and would love to hear more about it... Would we be able to make our info private if we didnt want our pedigrees available to the public?

Kathleen, I believe its all private, and you can choose which to make public. So like you have chins for sale, you can just choose those ones to have public :)

I think a set yearly price would be nice :) I agree with Megan, if you had to pay per animal, it would get really expensive for some and make it more unappealing...

If it would replace these pedigree programs it would be worth it, but most people would still want the security of managing their own. It would have to be a very stable system! You would need to establish a successful history.

I like the idea of a centralized database.

I agree with Megan, however I am not sure about how much space on the server a person with 20 pedigrees and a person with 400 is going to differ. (Not saying per chin should be paid for, but different levels (ie. 0-100, 101-200, etc)

I'd be worried about losing all my info, I am pretty untrustworthy when it comes to having info online and nowhere else. I've got my pedigrees in their original form, on the computer in Excel, and in a print out of that in a separate folder.

It would, like shouts said, have to be very stable and avoid any downtime.

Info on a server upkept by a good IT person is MUCH safer then on the average home computer. Servers are designed with redundancy, like dual power supplies, and RAID arrays that make the chances of losing data VERY slim. Take this site for example, if it was not for purging, all the threads from 2000 would still be here....and many OLD threads are still here as proof of that.

I already use two different programs as a database for my chinnies on my own computer and I have an old file system with originals. I would use the online one, only for sales purposes cuz' I sure don't want to go through and input my chins again!! It took days to put them all in the ones I have now. Also as long as I could keep private the ones I wanted and public on the others.....I guess that would be ok.
