Hi guys,
some blood showed up in Demons urine this morning and so i immediately took him to the vet
I was relieved to be told it was just a infection and given some antibiotics to feed him via syringe
now i know how to scruff him but he seems to hate the taste of the meds and keeps struggling out of my grasp and refusing to take it
Any advice or tips?
im supposed to give him 1 ml per day over the next 3 days but im having a real hard time doing it :cry2:

What medicine?
My vet always recommended to give the medicine with something sweet, like apple juice. When Kismet was on meds, I simply mixed the meds with applesauce. There was no fuss after that.
Try injecting the meds into a mealie. A lot of people on here use that method to trick stubborn hedgehogs into taking their meds. I also had good luck with injecting the meds into hamburger.

Are you sure the dosage is 1 ml or is it .01 or .1? 1 ml seems like a lot and will be more difficult to get that amount into him.
You can try injecting mealworms. That works for a while until they figure it out. Some figure it out fast, others it takes a few days.
You can also mix it with a very small amount of applesauce, baby food or something else that he likes and syringe it to him.
Some of the meds are horrid tasting so you need to disguise them.

:thumbsupwink: On getting him to the vet so fast!
What kind of antibiotics did the vet give Demon?
When we had to give Baytril (which is horrid tasting apparently), we hid it in wet cat food. We got Hills A/D from the vets office. Its a wet cat food thats more liquidy, made for syringing. It made it easier to get the meds down and hopefully helped to hide some of the medicine. I'd basically suck up the meds in the syringe, then fill the rest of it with the Hills and give it a little shake to mix it up. **NOTE** They seem to love the A/D so it can be hard to get them off of it. Use it maybe as a last resort?
Does Demon eat any babyfood that you could hide it in? LIke Nancy mentioned..baby food, applesauce, etc. Basically anything liquidy enough to go in the syringe.
Also, when syringing, go from the side of the mouth rather than directly from the front.

Thanks for replying so fast!
yep very sure its 1 ml and your right it does seem like quite a lot :(
i do not know what its called i was told its antibiotics + vitamins, its yellow and slightly sticky and syrupy in texture and it smells sweet, in fact it smells alot like caramel
I am trying to approach from the side but hes having none of that
I do not have any baby food on me atm and its 10.30 pm here

I've never had any success injecting mealworms. Somehow I just don't find a lot of empty space inside them to absorb medicine.
So, no baby food. How about fruit flavored Jello or fruit flavored juice? Strawberry Boost or Strawberry Quik is usually successful (but not something that everyone has on hand).
Think about what you have in your house that is hedgehog safe (maybe not healthy but safe). Pudding that isn't chocolate?
And tomorrow, call the vet and ask the name of the meds, please. Thanks.

Is the name of the medicine not printed on the bottle?

Nope not printed on the bottle, will call tomorrow
I was carrying him to the car while my boyfriend did the paying and collection of the meds, he did ask what it was after being instructed on how much to give and he was told it was antibiotics with some vitamins, its a small glass bottle with about 6ml in it and a hand written label 'hedgehog, 1 ml daily)
I mixed some in with his kibble and tried feeding him bit by bit he ate some of it then did not want anymore and drank alot of water
I do have some strawberry yoghurt sort of thing, this are the ingredients (im transalating it from malay)
Fernleaf calcium cultured milk food
water, milk solids, sucrose, maltodextrin, tricalcium phosphate, Live cultures, permitted emulsifiers/stabilizers, flavourings and colourings.

Pandora did that when she got into a fight with my other female chilla we had to wrap her up from her head to her feet in a towel so she could not get loose..lol you have to allow them to take it at their own pace dont force it just be patient with him he will take it once he sees you are not letting him go till he does..lol

Strawberry yogurt works for tonight until we know what antibiotic he's on. Some antibiotics can't be taken with milk.
