Is runny poop the sign of illness. Rikki Really... um "reaks" and he is laying down, not waterery poos, but slop looking poos, but they still are brown.

Vet in order?

Got a poo sample just in case.

--He has been "reaking" for about 3 days now. The first day I thought he might of ate something that upset his tummy. 2nd day... I didnt give him any fiber with his CSL. 3rd day... well I am asking you and about ready to call the vet.

He gets fiber, like Fibersure, every 2 days and its not even 1/8 of a teaspoon.

---Also, he has been drinking fine, but I am a bit skeptical about his food intake. I broke up more food that I normally did for yesterday (dry kibble), and he ate his small servings of chicken, peas, and plum, and almost all his dry kibble. I did the same thing last night and got up this mrning to find the same thing, but I didnt give him his chicken, peas, and fruit like I normally do every night.

And he is getting crap stuck on the hair near his butt and his tail--its a green, brown color.

Yes, go immediatly to the vet!!! Sounds like a digestive infection to me! Bring a stool sample. I don't know about the food you're giving him, but check FORUMS for a correction, as I'll bet that's what caused it!!

I’d go back to basics and feed him only kibble. Sometimes, a food simply doesn’t agree with their tummies and you have to use the process of elimination to figure out which one it is. To make the kibble extra palatable, you can add a bit of low/no-sodium chicken soup base and some water to soften it up. But see if he’ll eat just his kibble for now before adding any extra.

Does he look ill? How are his wheel habits? Sometimes, a vet visit will stress out a hedgehog even more and compound the problem. Provided he’s still drinking well (loose poop and diarrhea can quickly dehydrate a hedgehog, so be careful), just watch him carefully for a few more days. Eliminate all treats, keep him warm and watch if his poop changes. If you notice bright green, mucous or blood, go to the vet.

Also, since he has poop sticking to his fur around his tail, try to keep him clean and put a tiny dab of Vaseline to prevent any rashes from occurring. It will create a bit of a barrier against the moisture and keep it from sticking to the fur.

Experts should be along shortly, so hold tight. It won’t hurt to call the vet for their input as well, but if possible, hold off on going to the vet for a bit until someone else can weigh in on this.

He needs to see a vet as it is possibly an intestinal infection. They can get upset tummies from food changes or stress but usually that does not cause the feces to smell that bad.

Keep us posted.

Oops. I missed where it said his poop smelled bad.

I don't know, but is it possible he's getting too much fibre as well?

Why are you giving him fiber? I have never heard of hedgehogs needing supplemental fiber. That may be causing the problem.

I havent gave anything new. Last night he got nothing but his regular kibble with no chicken, peas, or fruit.

Still the same thing. I dont see anything different with his wheel habits. There is still crap and everything else, so he is wheeling.

He doesnt look ill. He is still a happy hedge. I will get Vaseline:thumbsupwink:

--We are talking to the vets right now on the phone. Its sounds like the vet appointment is Saturday. :( Our schedules are heckick... and its mom's car taking me :( :(

Whats the cause of intestinal infection?
