I was curious to see whether hedgehog breeding/keeping is done mainly by males or females.

I have the impression that the majority of hedgie parents on this board are female -- young or youngish female at that. I'm not sure if it's because the characteristics, especially the appearance, of hedgehogs appeal to female pet owners more or if female hedgie owners are more active than their male counterparts in pursuing online information on hedgehogs, giving the impression that there are more of them in number.
As for their age group, the price factor making hedgehogs more accessible than more expensive pets such as pedigree dogs and cats may be a reason.

Actually, I classify anyone who posts before 7 a.m. on this board (except those who are in completely different time zones such as Europe or Asia) as "young-at-heart". "Youngish" is reserved for twentysomething in my dictionary. Oh, wait! That includes me, since I stopped counting my age after 29! *mhahaha* :p

I haven't even hit 20 yet... well...give it a month and a half. Then again, since that was mentioned for financial stability reasons I probably shouldn't have spoken up. No groceries for me this week, but Sadie will get anything she needs:laugh:. Maybe women prioritize their pets more than guys...but that's a guess. We treat them like our babies because of our maternal instincts maybe, so we do lots of chatting about them on forums to get advice so we can mother them well.

Okay, I will come forward and readily admit my age since my husband is now officially much older than me. :teehee:
I'm 39. Really. I'll be 40 in July.

I think it might just be that girls enjoy getting together to talk about their 'children' :rofl3:
Guys might be more inclined to merely ghost forums for information

I have found that hedgehogs are most popular to guys 10-16 and girls 16-mid 30's. I get an incredible amounts of emails from people in those groups.

I know I am in the minority, but I am everywhere I go. Male, a rare find at that! On the rat forums, I am one of few males, probably around 3. When you have over 15,000 members, thats the severe minority !!
There are some of us out there that love and care for our animals just as much. Why are we the minority? I don't think it has anything to do with the care and love, I think its the animals. Most guys are into dogs, some cats, but most dogs. And on dog forums that aren't about showing dogs have an even ratio of men and women. Rats, mice, hedgies, chins, these things are too cute for most men. Again, some of us can't resist. My girlfriend says I'm scary sometimes lol!!
