So this morning when I went out to do my routine check of the hedgies I noticed something odd. It felt cool and instantly I went into a mild panic. I start looking around the cages and notice a huge decrease in water intake on many of the cages water bottles. The heat went out!! And to top it off last night was well into the lower 50's uper 40's!! I've got heat pockets in with all the hedgies now as over half of them were cool to the touch and they are all coming out of it. Called the heating guy and it's some sort of panel that went out...great... Thank God I've been preparing for something like this for awhile. We have numerous hot hands on stock with covers.

Last November we had the power go out because the jerk that owned the house before us didn't bother running conduct from the house to the garage. I swear I could strangle this guy. Oh and to top it off he's a 'heating and airconditioning guy' Needless to say I didn't call him this morning to come fix the heat. Also when we had some of our older hedgehogs go into hybernation last fall/winter when the power went out we ended up loosing some of them that just were not quite right afterwards :( But it was much colder then 30's out during the day and colder at night.

Luckily it's warming up out side so they should be good until this evening. I've got two spare space heaters for them and more heat pockets to get them through. Ugh just needed to rant a bit.

Oh and update: Just got a call from the heat guy. He is bringing out the part I need and informed me by the way the furnace is installed wrong, it's on it's side....Something we should have fixed but isn't urgent!?!?! AHHHHHHHHHH:pullhair:

Oh no!!!! That's one of my nightmares. I hope they will all be ok and that your heat gets reliably fixed soon.

I have a similar thing happend 2 years ago. The appartment was badly wired and all heating was on ONE breaker. Those breaker where old and one october/november morrning or afternoon (I was working, of course!) it went out. I returned at 5:30 to a house at 15C (59F) and se semi-hibernating hedgie. Let me tell ya that Litchi came to work (and was the talk of the building!) a couple of days before WE get the breaker fixed at our expense:pullhair:

Well everyone is doing well. Found out that the panel was not the only thing broken on the heater. Ugh....so now we have to purchase a whole new furnace. We are just bringing all the hedgehogs from the heated garage into the house for the winter. We did this last winter when the power went out and it cut down on our electric bill greatly. Thank God we have two extra bedrooms to put them in. Just a lot of moving and work to get things shifted around. I'm hoping to have everyone settled in by today since we have about 7 litters due...oh today :(

We were told we have live wires just laying around, the current heater is too big for the garage and overheats, it's about 125 degree's in the garage attic where it is located, and all I'm thinking is OMG how has the garage not burned down! Not to mention we had to have the circut box rewired last November because it was not right. I'm so ticked because we just bought this house less than 2 years ago. Had a home inspection and so many things are 'wrong' when a tech comes out but we were never told they were wrong by the inspector.

It's never an easy fix, is it? At least you have room in the house for them. Good luck.
