I've noticed a lot of 'oops' and newbie litters popping up and thought I would post how my weekend of due litters went. I had 7 litters due. I had a wedding to go to and we left late Friday night and came back Sunday morning. I did have someone here to check on them though.

Well I came home early Sunday morning to find a litter of 2 with no problems, a litter of 6 with no problems, a litter of three with their faces ripped off and lastly a mother that had prolapsed and bled out.

So although two litters were fine, two were very much NOT okay. You never know what can happen. I also had a litter of at least 3 born early this morning (since I can only peak in I don't have an exact count). Still waiting on two moms.

I just wanted to remind everyone that yes they may be cute. And yes your past litters/experience or other breeding adventures my have been a breeze, but don't always expect everything to be okay.

Oh, I'm sorry about your rough week! But thank you for posting this. It's good for these newbies who already want to breed to see that there is a lot of heartache involved with breeding.

so sorry about your losses. it's always sad to lose them. and people who are not as familiar with breeding/hedgies should definitely take note on how difficult breeding can be.

Sorry to hear about the two litters. I take it the one mom didn't survive the prolapse? If her litter survived, can they be fostered to the others?

I'm so sorry this happened Sarah. This is the part of breeding that SUCKS. Thanks for posting about it. This is what all would be breeders need to hear.

No she did not survive and the one hoglet she had was blue in the face which shows he was too big and she struggled to get him out.

Definately the part that sucks, but part of the chance one takes when breeding an animal.

On a happy note all 6 hoglets from S'more's litter are doing well. Two were cuddled up right outside her igloo (she moved it last night) so I had to pop them back in and was happy to see they are all growing and doing well.
