Yesterday my friend answered the door. Her little 3 lb chihuahua walked out on the front porch to greet the visitors. Then she saw a dog walking by & went to greet him as well. He snatched her up & shook her, would not let go while several people tried to free her. Once the large dog did drop her, the lady walking the large dog took off. Not even "I'm sorry". Just gone. My friend rushed her baby to the vet. They took her in for surgery, but her heart stopped during surgery. This sweet little dog who came to work with my friend everyday & went everywhere with her, is now gone. Please watch your little dogs. I truly don't know why I'm posting this. I know my friend is totally devastated, her baby girl is gone. Please be very careful when you open your front door. Please say a prayer for Miranda & her little Cochita. It is a loss she'll never fully recover from.
Thank you

How horrible. Did she report this to the police and did she get a description of the owner and dog that did this? But, if the dog being walked was on a leash then I think it was her responsibility to keep her dog in her house. Not that I am not so sorry this happened. My thoughts are with her. It is very important to teach dogs not to run out an open door unless given permission. And someimes I pick my little dogs up before I open the door.

You are correct, teach your dogs not to leave your house. The other dog was on a leash. Based on the little conversation that happened, the large dog had problems with small dogs. But he was on a leash. My friend's baby ran right up to the other dog & was grabbed. The poor little girl had no idea life could be that mean. Then the other dog wouldn't release her. That made things so much worse. I'm a big dog person. I'm not saying anything against big dogs. I have a Rott. I'm just saying, watch your little ones. Please keep my friend & her baby in your prayers. Please teach your large dogs better manners. Thank you for responding. My heart is breaking & there's nothing I can do, but at least I can warn other small dog owners to be really, really careful with their babies.
Thank you,

How awful :(
We have small dogs (2 yorkies and 2 maltese) and they run out every time the doors opened if we dont get them back. except with me as they know not to do that with me.

It's a shame the little dog was killed :( Sadly...It sounds like the owners fault, not the owner of the large dog. If the large dog was leashed, they were not breaking any laws however, the owner of the small dog did not have their dog leashed, thus breaking the leash laws. There was one night when I was out sitting on the front porch with my dog. He WAS leashed, and a small yorkie ran right up onto our porch, while the owners stood their laughing. Gavin does NOT like strange dogs. They are lucky that I can control my dog, and their dog was not hurt. My neighbors told them "You are lucky your dog went up on their porch, and didn't come up onto my porch, it would have been dead". People need to keep their dogs under control. Not all dogs are dog friendly, and if the dog was leashed, or kept under control the death would have been prevented :(
On another note, my coworkers corgi just killed her moms chihuahua :( Stupid mistake, that could have been prevented.

It's not a matter of teaching big dogs better manners. Some big dogs are predacious by design. A small animal running toward them is A. an aggressive motion on the part of the small dog and B. a predatory trigger.
As a lifetime owner of large and giant breed dogs, it frosts my cookies that small dog owners think that everything their dog does is cute and adorable and should be accepted. A 3lb yorkie snaps and bites at someone and everyone laughs at him but let a 100 lb dog snap and bite at people and it's not acceptable.
A 100 lb dog running out the door toward a dog being walked on the sidewalk would be the cause for horror but a 3 lb dog doing it is ok?
It's time we hold all dogs to the same standard and stop making excuses for poor dog ownership.
Of course that owner left. For pete's sake, her dog was just attacked, defended himself and killed another dog. What is she supposed to do, wait around to be invited to tea? No one stopped to think how traumatic this was for her. AND now she has to deal with the OMG Mean Big Dog mentality.
I'm sorry the small dog died but the owner should have taught him better manners and treated him more like a dog than one of her children. THAT'S where the issues arise.

Nancy, well said! You summed up much of my thoughts, but a lot better. Everything a small dog does IS cute. When a big dog does its "OMG that dog is MEAN"
