I just went to change my little boys fleece liners, and I noticed in his upstairs, where he goes to the bathroom, there was a quarter sized amount of this strange stuff. It was clear/yellowish and mucousy like, but it has red in it, it looked like it could have been blood. I checked him over completely, and he is fine, active, eating, running, not grumpy... His poops are fine. He is only a little over a year. His belly seems fine and his "parts" are in tact and do not look out of the ordinary. I had taken him to the vet recently because I suspected he had mites, but the vet didnt find anything, put him on revolution anyways. She said he was really healthy and a good weight. He has still been scratching around his ears and neck though. But he has pretty dry skin. He's had two doses of revolution 2 wks apart, and is due for it again this wednesday. I am watching my friends female hedgehog that is under a year old, for a month. I quarantined her for a week and a half, and then moved her cage next to his several days ago because thats the warmest area. She was checked by the vet recently and is healthy.
Does anyone have any idea what this strange substance is and why it would have blood or something like that in it??? I didn't notice it anywhere else. Please help!!!!! :( :(

I think he couldve had boy time(reason for mucousy stuff), and probably bit or scratched himself (on his penis inside his sheath..since you say when you looked over everything looked fine) and thats is where the blood came from.

Someone else will come around and give suggestions to what it could be. But IMO if you have anything to post about in the emergency section.. you should be calling the vet.

ETA Missed the quarentine part. You should NEVER allow them to be that close to each other within 30days. A proper quarentine is no shorter than 30days. If you do not have the proper space(warm or whatever) to quarentine these animals properly then you shouldnt be pet sitting for your friend.

How do you know the girl doesnt have some bacteria or soemthing that how now transfered over to your boy?

thanks. yeah, it was mostly reddish though, and it really doesnt look like the typical "boy time" substance, but that is a possibility. I'm going to call the vet in the morning when they open.

It could have been little boy stuff and he got over exuberant but does he usually do things like that in the litter box?

How have his poops been lately? Are they loose or slimey? Has he had any different foods or treats lately. It could have been a bit of intestinal mucous with some blood. What do they smell like? What do you use in his potty area? If a litter, put paper towels underneath to show anything out of the ordinary. If liners, use white or predominantly white flannel or cotton.

Keep track of his food and water intake.

When my Kesia had her intestinal infection, she had slimy mucousy poops that were sort of an orangish red with blood streaks in it.

He usually does it in his bed, but I've seen him do it out of his bed before. His poops look normal, brown and firm. Same food, He ate quite a lot of freeze dried mealworms and waxworms the other night. His 'potty area' is fleece - its white with colored stripes, which he designated himself - its just the upstairs. There is a ramp leading up to it and he mainly goes to the bathroom up there. I watched him eat and drink last night. He drank a lot.

It kind of looks like his poops are a little slimey with that same sort of stuff kind of on them. Any ideas of what it could be? Im still trying to get a hole of the vet.

Sounds like some sort of intestinal infection or parasite. Save a fresh poop sample to take in to the vet.

thanks for your help/advice nancy.
i finally got an appointment with a vet, course its 30-45 minutes away. and of course the the exotic vet only works 2 days a week at the ER vet near me...
He really hasn't been going to the bathroom much at all in the past 2 nights, only a little bit.. some of the poop is really watery with reddish color, and there was one spot of smooshed very green poop too. I hope my baby is okay. The soonest appointment I could get is 215pm today, he seems to be eating okay and is active when I hold him, his feet and face are covered in poo though, so I know he has been pooping while he's been running. and since his face seems to have poop smeared on it in the same spot, im guessing he is still scratching a lot at his face/ear with his poopy feet.
