Hey everyone! I have a question about reporting poor pet store conditions. I am pretty sure this is more than enough reason to report, but I just wanted to check before I go "causing trouble."

There is a horrendous pet store near me. It is actually where I got my hedgies. The first one I got there was a sweet little boy I named Meeko. Unfortunately he was terminally ill with pneumonia when I got him. I took him to the first vet that would take him and he just gave me meds and false hope. I followed his instructions as well as the instructions on breeder/ hedgehog-specific websites perfectly, but he kept getting worse so I took him to another vet who had more experience with hedgehogs. He told me there was nothing that could have been done - I rescued him too late, so we eased the pain and I held him safe and warm until he crossed the rainbow bridge. I had only had him 3 weeks and was livid (I get attached to my pets just like humans), so I went to the pet store and complained and they gave me a "replacement," a little girl I named Maserati. They told me SHE was a boy. I took her to an exotics vet out of town right away and luckily we caught the infection in time and she is doing well now, though it has taken me all this time to improve her personality and trust from the trauma she had at the pet store. They also advised feeding them hedgehog or ferret food. (Yikes!)

This all took place in late November - early December last year (2007). I haven't been back since because it was all so traumatic, but finally today I went in while trying to find a travel cage. I was completely disgusted by the living arrangements: 2 hedgehogs in a glass approx. 1'x1.5' cage with almost no ventilation, Yesterday's News pellets for bedding, NO WHEEL, NO HIDING PLACES (they sell pigloos, wheels, tunnels, etc. in the store but don't have the decency to provide one for the animals in their care), 2 over sized bowls for food (Vitacrap, which one hedgie was sleeping in while the other was huddled in the corner) and water (which didn't look too fresh to me). Also, they don't handle the hedgehogs at all; I had to pick them up myself. I took a picture on my cell phone, but can't get it to send to my computer or I would share it. There was also a chinchilla in the cage above - same conditions but there was only 1 chin in the cage, scratching at the side of the cage in an attempt to get out and losing huge tufts of hair. I don't know much about chins, but I'm pretty sure this is not acceptable for them either. Also, when I got my hedgie about 10 months ago they were selling them for $120 and now they are $249 - for sick hedgies! Wish I could rescue them, too, but I just don't have the money, space, or time to take on more little ones (grad student living in small apartment).

So, all of that long novel to say - please tell me I can report them or do something about it! Not sure what the laws are about this stuff, if there are any; it is in Arkansas. If I can, who exactly do I report it to? The USDA? (Fyi - some of the USDA links in the FAQ section are broken.) Thanks!

Sadly, pet stores really only need to give animals food, water, and a cage. Not really the proper cage or food either. I learned this when I saw a chin seizing and dying at a pet supermarket. They do need to bring them to a vet when ill though. I would call animal control, they should come and check it out. You can also report it to the local police and ask where you can get the most help. Then call and report the situation to the pet store owner, and if it is a chain, to the main office. Speak to as many people as you can. I would try to get more pictures of the sick animals, if possible, before reporting them.

Sometimes, speaking with an employee or manager, you can kindly suggest how to improve the enviroment. Some people will help, others not. It is worth a shot though. Also, you can bring in a care sheet for both heggies and chins, and give it to someone who does seem to care. Good luck, pet stores are horrible, I hate them and think they should be illegal. Poor animals.

Are they USDA lic. at all? Any pet store selling hedgehogs has to legally be lic., if not you have grounds to call the USDA on them. You can also report sick animals to them. I've had to do this on a few occasions from breeders selling hedgehogs too young, or without a lic.

Unfortunately otherwise the pp is right, petstores are only required to give them the bar min. A lot of petstores won't put an igloo or hidy spot in because if the people can't see the animal they won't buy it...cruel I know but I've seen it done many times.

You can try talking to them but unless you are dealing with a truly good soul they might just brush you off and worry about their profit.

Thanks for your advise. I checked <http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare/efoia/index.shtml> and I could not find them anywhere. The only things on the entire License and Registration List I found in Searcy were the name of a couple under the exhibitors list and a Yorkie breeder. Just to be sure, the pet store should be listed under "dealers," right? Anywhere else I need to check?

Otherwise I am going to report them ASAP. Just wish I had thought about it before when all that happened with Meeko. Actually I wish I knew then what I know now about hedgehog care. Does anyone have a care sheet for hedgies and chins already made up? I don't want to take in 10 pages because they won't read it, but maybe 1-1.5 would be more likely to be taken seriously. I am going back when the manager is on duty and having a chit chat, but will report them as well just to be sure.

One good thing is that petstores like that don't often last long. I bought very sick mice from a petstore like that once; thankfully it's gone now. I wish I would have had better sense before I bought the mice; watching them die from their illness was very traumatic.

Yes, it's awful! Unfortunately, since this is such a small town, that pet store is the only one in Searcy (WalMart does sell pet supplies, though). But the next closest pet store is quite a drive, so the one here doesn't have much competition and grossly overprices everything. They aren't in too much danger, other than the awful conditions and being in violation of the USDA.

I went in to talk to them today, and I really think the employees have been very misinformed, and just have no clue. I asked to hold the hedgies and had to get them out myself. The younger one was pretty friendly and curious, but the older one (I'm assuming, based upon sizes) did not unball the entire 10 minutes I was holding him/her other than half a nose. It's the one that rarely moves from sleeping in the food dish. As I was holding them, I was asking basic questions about their care practices and when I tried to (gently) correct what I saw that was wrong, the employees just looked confused. Apparently, the owner rarely makes an appearance in the store but has total control of decisions and practices. Hopefully a visit from the right authorities will change that.

Does anyone know whether the USDA has state-specific offices, or is it just the 3 listed here: <http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare/downloads/acorg.html>?

USDA is based on regions there is the East region that is everything East of the Mississippi and then the West region which is everything west of the Mississippi (at least I'm pretty sure that's how it is) Since I'm lic. I just report everything to my inspector and she passes it along to the right office/people for me.

Good luck and hopefully a nip in the butt will make this store shape up!

I printed this out: http://www.hedgehogwelfare.org/HWScarebrochure.pdf and gave it to a petstore I was having issues with. As you said, most employees just don't know how to care for the hedgehogs; they're not being negligent on purpose, they just don't know any better. I did see changes with regard to the temperature and space requirements when I gave this to the store, so it might be helpful to your store as well.

Thank you! I will be sure to pass that along! Oh, do you happen to know where I can find one for Chins? I don't know much at all about them, but I do know they need better care than they are receiving there. :(

I know I'm from the chinnie side, but yes, fur biting is a serious issue. It means that they are stressed. Did you say they were in an aquarium 1-1.5? God, they are misinformed. If you inform the USDA, be sure to include the chinnie in there too. I don't know of any websites of the top of my head that are care sheets, but I will look.

I feel so sorry for all the chinchillas and hedgies in pet stores. Revenge on a pet store! Yay!
