Hi,

I give my hedgie treats and all of that kind of good stuff. I was just wondering if anyone else does, and if it is bad for them, thanks

I guess that would depend on what kind of "treats" you are giving your hedgie. I think everyone gives their hedgie treats, but you have to make sure they are good for your hedgie. Basically, insects, mealies, cooked meat, fruits and veggies tend to be safe. Anything else, I usually go by this rule "If it's safe for a baby, it's safe for my babies". Now, this is not 100% true (I wouldn't give my hedgies anything sugary). But, as a genaral rule, that works. Baby food and toddler food tend to be some of the favorites around here. Especially the meat sticks for toddlers. Just watch the sodium and preservative contents and anything else not "natural" and not too much at once and don't let them live on treats, that's why they are called "treats"! :) There are also special recipes that some of the folks here have tried, such as yams cooked in chicken broth with turkey. It's up to you, just be careful not to give them anything bad for them. Hope this helps!

I give my girls treats too. I just made them a cookie treat using a modified version of a soft dog treat. I added some peanut buggers and other hedgie treats to it and toped it off with a dried waxworm or cricket on top before baking, they love it. Its made with babymeat and needs to be kept frozen or refrigerated but thats ok. If anyone wants the recipe I can give it to you.

I think the poll is do you or don't you give treats.....

I occasionally make home made 'cat' biscuits for my girls. I change the ingredients just a bit and don't typically cook them until they are as hard as a cat or dog biscuit should be. I will warn ya though, if you make them... keep them cold, since they contain no preservatives or mold inhibiters they will mold and go bad quickly if left outside in a container...

Hi,
Here is the treat recipe that was asked for, It does need to be either refrigerated or frozen or they will go bad.
Hershey's Treats

2- 3 1/2 oz jars of baby meat like chicken or turkey your choice.

2/3 c Wheat germ

1 1/3 c dry milk

1/4 c each of peanut buggers and bugs and berry

mix well and drop by spoonful on greased sheet top each one with a dried cricket or waxworm. bake 350 12-15 min. Store in container in fridge keep no longer than a week or you may freeze.

any questions just email me. My girls love it. I keep them in the freezer and pull out just a few for the next couple of days.

Thanks for the recipe, it doesn't look as hard as I thought it would be!

it is easy but they will stick to the pan a little, Chocolate is a picky eater but she loves these and Hershey will eat anything. I made it with baby turkey food but I think you can use just about any kind of meat. I have thought about adding a little calcium to it too.
Good luck in making them and email me if you have any questions.
