Okay I don't have a hedgehog but I'm trying to get ready for one and I'm very confused as far as diets go. Everyone says, well I feed my hedgehog a little bit of this and a little of this and maybe some of this and this and none of this but some of this.
Okay I'm not good at coming to a decision about what to feed an animal so I really could use an indetail schedule. If you have one and it works good and your hedgies DON'T STINK, please please PLEASE type it here for me. I'd appreciate it!!

I just buy a mix from a lady named Pat Storm her URL is http://expage.com/thisledew I just buy it by the pound and don't worry about anything else. People feed their hedgies a bunch if different stuff because there still isn't a whole lot known about a hedgies diet like you would know for a dog or cat. Pat also lists what is in her mix, so if you don't want to buy the mix you can get an idea of what to give your hedgie. Others, I'm sure, will also let you know what they feed their hedgies. Just make sure it's a high quality food. I'm sure there's some old threads on here about what to give your hedgie and what to look for in cat/hedgie foods. Hope this helps! :)

P.S. I forgot to mention that as far as when I feed them, I just give them fresh food every evening and make sure they have some food in the morning when I get up incase they come out for a snack during the day. I also give them fresh fruits and veggies (apple, carrots, whatever they will eat you might have to experiment with what they like best) along with mealies. If I give fruits and veggies one night then I give them about 4-5 mealies the next night (but if they look up at me with that really cute face they usually give them more, which happens every time!)

I feed my two everynight at about 7pm. They get a mix of:
L'Avain (hedgie food)
Neura Wellness (cat food)
Chicken soup for the cat lover's soul (cat food)
Innova (cat food)
They also get a couple of freeze dried crickets & or mealworms.
Once a week they get a treat of baby food. Toddler turkey sticks, sweet potatos, what ever I have in the house.
And if I feel real ambitious and cook.....they will get a bit of what we are having.
meat, veggies, etc...But this is rare.

I think the general rule of thumb is to provide your hedgie with the best of what you have available to you. Here's what Wally's feeding schedule looks like.
I offer 2 tablespoons of his mix that consists of Royal Canin Slim 38, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul Light, and Innova Light. I remove all the old food and offer fresh every night between 8-8:30 pm. I rotate his insects and fresh foods each night. For example:
Sun- 2 mealworms, mixed veggies
Mon-2 freeze dried crickets, cooked, unseasoned chicken or turkey breast
Tues- 2 mealworms, diced apple
Wed-2 freeze dried crickets, low-fat cottage cheese
Thurs- 2 mealworms, mixed veggies
Fri- 2 freeze dried crickets, scrambled or hard boiled eggs
Sat- 2 mealworms, mashed banana or baby food

All freshfood is offered in hedgehog portions and removed after an hour. Wally always licks his dish clean so I never have to worry about having food out for too long.

Good luck!

Right now I've been feeding Dusty 8n1 hedgehog food and a high protein Science Diet meal combo, just a small handful of each mixed up. For treats I give him whatever is around - mealworms, bits of egg, hamburger, lean deli meat, turkey, banana - he even likes dove breast :p I keep his staple food dish full, changing it all out each morning and topping it off in the afternoon when I come home. I'm planning on branching out to other cat foods, like the Chicken Soup stuff - seems highly recommended around here, and as little as he eats a bag will last me a long time.

From what I've been told, give them lots of variety to keep them from getting locked into just 1 food, since it might cause problems down the road. Basically if they'll eat it and it's healthy for them, put it in their diet.

1. I would not feed insects every night. Insects are high in fat.
2. Young hedgehogs reject EVERYTHING the first dozen times you offer it.
3. Feed what the breeder is feeding at first. Speak with the breeder about diet.

I feed 8 hedgehogs. I feed dry kibble and water in the morning, wet food at night. Routine is this

6:30 ayem--up and at 'em. Fresh water for everyone, fresh kibble. Kibble is a blend of Innova, Wellness, Royal Canin cat foods and Chicken Soup Dog food and 8 in 1 Hedgehog food. Pick up poo off of liners and change paper towels under wheels and under food/water bowls.

7:00 pee em. I chop a variety of fresh fruits and veggies for all my animals. Hedgehogs, rats and Short Tailed Possum get a blend each night. It may be cantaloupe, watermelon, strawberries and honeydew or peas, lima beans, corn, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini squash and baked sweet potato. Every other night they get a protein snack, either baked chicken or turkey sticks. About once a month everyone gets a small feeder goldfish. Some eat it, some don't. Three times a week they get a pinch of Missing Link on their wet food and twice a week they get two canned crickets.

Goldfish? I've never heard of that. Are there any benefits to feeding them goldfish, nutrition wise? How do you manage it, just stick it in their food bowl?

Do you folks cook veggie before feeding them to your hedgies? I often steam veggies to take to work for dinner and figured I could set some aside for a hedgie...

Any veggies that you WOULD NOT recommend?

Great thread, BTW...
