The pictures I have added are taken of a little hoglet whos father is also his step-brother ... the pet-store failed to sex the new litter of Hedgehogs, resulting in a pregnant mother and three sisters.

Most of the inbreeded litter of five was destroyed by the mother, but a few survived simply to pass away a few days later.

Most breeders can probably point out the deformations in this guy.

snr-j,

I'm sorry to be a totally ignorant non-breeder, but could you point out for me what these flaws are?!

Thanks!

PS - regardless - that's still awful

I am totally disgusted by those pics. I am so ticked off about this. That could have been prevented and yet it wasn't. I wish you all the luck in the world. :(

I wouldn't call you ignorant if your not breeding, dont worry. The apparent deformaties are as followed:

(1) The face should not be nearly as red as it is and the head is not shaped correctly.
(2) The limbs are curved inwards moreso then normal hoglets.
(3) Those shoulders are located a lot lower.
(4) The neck is a lot more thicker looking.
(5) The quills are only sticking out about 40% ... the rest is still in the skin. Its almost like feeling hair after its been through a buzzer ... not right.
(6) The rib cage protruded quite extensively from his chest.

You can look around in the "Breeding & Babies" section for tons of pictures of normal hoglets, and visually see the differences. This baby was about a week old when I took the shots.

On a good note, the pet store now has someone who can sex hedgehogs. I now work there, and look after the livestock ensuring no opposing genders stay in the same cages, among other common sense issues ...
