Sorry for so many question! But i do want to make sure that i have it all down pack before i get my little hedgie. Now i was told that you don't have to bring a Hedgehog to the vet like you do with a cat or dog, now is this true? should i find a vet? And can anyone in Ontario, Canada tell me the price (rought idea) for a vet check-up?

yes...you do need to find a vet. i dont know the reasoning that some people (whomever told you that) for 'smaller animals are less worthy of vet care'but yes find a good vet who will see exotics, and keep an emergency clinic contact/directions on hand. Im not in Canada but ive paid between $22-$50 just to walk in the door. my new vet charges about $32,but the price goes down for 'followup checks'. Take your hedgehog in at least once a year for a baseline check, as well as running fecals and any other test your vet deems neccessary (eg...bloodwork, urine samples, skin swabs, etc) its good to find a vet before you need one, btw. last march i had to take my LB to the ER clinic..tthey asked us for our regular vet, thank goodness i had the name with me, and they faxed/transfered files and all for us, as well as giving our vet a heads up to make time for us the next morning, get meds ready for us, etc..

by the way-www.hedgehogcentral.com has a veterinarian listing which can help you find a vet :)

I always bring in my new hedgehogs for a "benchmark" exam - basically, so the vet can meet the hedgehog and do a general check-up that they can guage everything from then on. I then bring them in yearly (unless something specific is wrong).

The vet I use is the Links Road Animal & Bird Clinic. They are at Yonge St. and the 401 in Toronto and specialize in exotic pets.

It is around $60 for the initial exam... and around $50 for the yearly... but it gives good peace of mind.

They just put up a website http://www.thelinksroadanimalclinic.com/clinic/thelinksroadanimalclinic/
