View Full Version : Hedgehog Color Identification

Recently, someone brought it to my attention that many people have difficulty determining the color of their hedgehog(s), and then asked me if I could design some sort of chart system that would hopefully add something else for people to go by.
So I did,

Tell me if you think it is good, Yes or No.
If no, please let me know why. Any ideas for improving it would be appreciated.

I think it is a very good site. It even helped me to identifily my baby's quills....sort of. Here's the thing. Her quills are banded, however she also has many clean, white quills. I don't know if I'd say there is one at every other quill, but I have noticed many plane white quills on her. What is that called?

I'm glad you like the site, thanks.
Snowflakes don't always have 1:1 ratio of banded:unbanded spines, that's just the most common range. They can be more or less heavily roaned. All hedgehogs are likely to have some white quills mixed in, this does not mean that they are roans, but if they are carrying a roan allele they might have more than the usual amount of white quills, but still not enough to be called a snowflake. If your baby is still young then it might not be done roaning in (if it's a roan).
Some helpful terms
Roan-> white hairs (spines) mixed in with normal coat
Snowflake-> name for lightest range of roan in hedgehogs
White-> name for next highest range
Double White-> Highest range of roan in hedgehogs (no banded quills)

My little gal is actually Algerian Chocolate. But she does have some plain white quills on her. Is that odd?

Great site! The only thing that I can think of to make it better would be to add pics:)

It isn't odd at all for base colors to have some white quills mixed in.

What type of pics? More color diagrams, or actual pictures--> the home page (http://www.geocities.com/hedgehogcolors/) has some actual pictures on it, and there is already a color guide on the web with pictures, so I didn't think there needed to be another one.
Thank you all for the compliments on the site, and I hope it helps to make color identification easier for everyone.
