Hello all! My hedgie has lost most of the use of his hind legs this past weekend (see posts in "dragging hind legs"), and I've noticed that he certainly has a harder time walking around in his bedding (Carefresh) than he does on solid or smooth surfaces. I went out and bought some puppy training pads to put in the bottom of his cage under just a small amount of bedding thinking it might be easier for him to get around in. My question is this: the puppy pads are partially comprised of a thin layer of plastic. DO you think this will be unsafe due to him possibly eating it? I think I already know the answer, but I wanted to get some other opinions. Thanks!

I know Razzle loves to chew on plastic, so I wouldn't use anything with plastic in it. How about Vellux blankets?? They are soft and comfy and also help with traction. How is little Q-bert doing???

About 30 mins afer I put them in the cage I took them out again. I just don't want to take any chances. Where can I get Vellux? I've heard it talked about before but have never seen them.

I found vellux blankets at Walmart, you could always cut one up to make a couple of cage liners.. or i'm sure you can find it at your local fabric store.

Yup, Walmart, Target...probably stores like Bed, Bath & Beyond or Linens & Things. They are in the bedding section. I bought a twin size one at Walmart and just cut it up in different sizes (some liners, and some smaller pieces to use as blankies). They are soft & fuzzy and don't have any threads that can wrap around little legs. Fleece works too. I cut up an old fleece sweatshirt to use as blankets, but I think you could find some at a fabric store as well.

Oh, I didn't realize it's a kind of blanket. I always thought it was a pet-care product. Thanks for cluing me in!

If you have time...check out the Pins-n-Needles website. This woman makes the best liners that I have seen out there. Way more durable then the Vellux. I have had my liners for over 2 years now, and they wash and dry perfect every time.
Here is the website.:)

Here are 2 of the sets I bought from her.

Some hedgies chew vellux, some chew fleece, some chew paper towels. Try different things and be observent. The thing about puppy pads, some have a scent on them, that would be a concern of mine.
