Well, I don't have any explaination for what happened. My little female kit born on 7/20/04 was dead last night. By all of her actions she was a normal kit that barked a lot and slept alot. I check on her every morning before work and yesterday was no exception. When I got home at 5:30pm, She was sitting peacfully on top of a cardboard tube in her cage. At 8:15 when I when to my animal room to clean up and let them all out to play, I noticed right away that something was wrong when I saw her laying in an unnatural position on her side in front of the cage door. I picked her up and she was very stiff and not at all warm. Her eyes were stuck open and she wasn't responding to stimulation. I am crushed and have no idea what could have happened to her. She had no hair missing and no marks of any kind. I checked her little limbs for breaks, but there was nothing. It happened so fast. Do you think her mom could have hurt her internally or "squished" her eventhough she is so old and weighed 115g? I was going to take more pics of her last night too, but now the only ones I have are the blurry ones in my gallary.:( :nolove: :Paw:

I'm sorry for your loss. Sudden death of a healthy chin is so disheartening. I recommend you take her for a necropsy to find out what happened. To keep the cost down just have the physical necropsy done without the lab tests. I lost a kit this year very suddenly like yours and had a necropsy done. The vet found that she had gotten a piece of food lodged in her trachea and couldn't breath. She said there was nothing I could have done even if I had been there and seen it happen.

i'm really sorry to hear of your loss.

to answer your question, i've heard of moms running around in the cage and accidentally landing on a kit. i don't know how old the kits were, though.

the mother was only 115 grams? Is it really a good idea to breed one so small?

I am sorry about your baby. It actually probably would be good to have a necropsy done on the baby.

She may have fallen off a ledge and broke her neck or mom could have jumped on her back by accident when running around. Either way..I'm very sorry. Not being there to see what may have happened it's hard to tell. I have seen one of my mom's be frolicky and land on a kit and it did kill her. She broke her back.

Yes, it was the baby that was this size. I would never breed a mother so small and have never even heard of one.
