Training your hedgie

I was wonering if its possible to "train" your hedgie to come to you if his/her name is called. I been trying with no sucsess. Have any of you been victorious? :confused:

When I walk into the hedgie room at night I have many that come to the bars of their cages just by hearing my voice. I know some of them know their names but never tried having them come when called. :)

I think that the ones who actually come when called are rare; I've been able to get all of my hedgehogs to associate the sound of their name with food and come out of their nest box when they hear it-- or something similar to it; but I've only had two hedgehogs who would actually come running to me if I called their name while they were out exploring (Tiggy and Peregrin, neither were successful breeders and seemed to dislike all other hedgehogs with a passion).

I bet this would be fairly simple if you consistently used clicker training (operant conditioning with a secondary reinforcer.) google it and give a try, i'd be interested to see what you find.

I know a long time ago someone was trying to do the clicker training with their hedgehog. I'm not sure how it worked for them. You might want to check the old threads and see if you can find there posts.

well, you can give your hedgie a special treat (the one he likes the most) and every time you call your hedgie's name offer it for him and give him ( a little only)... next day do the same.... until your hedgie gets to kno that every time you call him he'll get some....

take note : when you call your hedgie's name you must be a littel far from him ( first time you shouldn't be that far -maybe in the same room- and once you feel that your hedgie understands the trick go a littel farther - you may be standing in the kitchen and your hedgie in your room)..

it would be soo cute if my piggies would come when i called them, but this hasnt quite happened for me, however when i bring gwen outside she will follow me around, its so cute she just walks along behind me following where i go, i think its cause shes not a huge adventure pig shes more of a give me cuddles piggie

lol thats funny baton. sometimes when i say chupa's name he might look over at me but thats about it.
