Here is a poem that I grew up with. My family deeply believes in Rainbow Bridge and I think it can help children (of all ages) ease the pain of the death of a furry family member.

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

That is a really lovely poem. I hope that one day when I pass I will be reunited too with all my past beloved animals. I know however it will turn into a giant dog pile, and I, the pancake underneath.

I actually printed that off a website soon after Scooter passed on.

I, too, hope to cross that bridge and be reunited with Scooter and all my other pets that pass.

Though, I made my other pets swear they'd live forever. And yes, I know, I'm crazy.

I love that poem. I have it engraved on a wooden box for Wally's ashes. I know that he's on the other side of the bridge, waiting for me to bring the mealies :) I miss my little guy

That is a beautiful poem, and i also believe i'll be reunited w/my pets after i die. (i HOPE so, anyway!) I printed it off the internet last year and gave it to my brother and sister in law in a sympathy card i got for them when they had to put down thier dog last year. She was 13 1/2 years old and had a tumor in her spine and couldn't walk anymore. They were so distraught over losing her, they got her as a pup before they had any kids so she was like thier first kid they had. I like to think the rainbow bridge poem helped them a little in thier grieving.
