Here is the story of the two baby black birds that passed away today in the afternoon...
For the last 3 weeks or so I have been observing the development of this 'family' of birds. By the way they are wild birds. The mother and father decided to make a nest right outside our window so I could see everything that was happening in the nest. Then after a few days the female laid eggs and then the young hatched. They were so adorable!! So small and pink. Well the mother and father took turns in feeding the babies every few minutes and ocassionally sat on them to keep them warm. After a while they started to grow feathers and now I could count that there were 3 of them.
They kept on growing stronger and bigger.
Then today a horrible thing happened...
We had some visitors over so I didn't have a look at the nest for a while. Then when the people went home, I noticed that there was alot of grey feathers on the pavers outside. I thought that maybe a pigeon died or something like that. Then I went and looked at the nest and there was only one chick left! :(
I don't exactly know what happened but here is what I think..
In Australia (that's where I live) we have these horrible, ugly birds called butcher birds. They kill and feed on young chicks and eggs. You know Kookaburras?? Well the beaks of the kookaburras are the same as the butcher birds', so they are really strong, sharp and wide. They are horrible birds. Last year they tried to kill my pet budgie.
Another possibility is that the babies might have fallen out of the tree and a cat might have ate them.
Sorry, I'm making such a bit deal out of this but I watched the babies grow each day from the time they were just eggs.
I hope they have a wonderful time in birdie heaven, that their little sister or brother isn't too lonely and that the parents aren't too sad :(
