It's almost the holidays and I'm begining to think about where my hedgie is going to go while I'm away visitng my family. Usually either I can take her with me or find someone to babysit so it's no problem. This year I'm flying and none of my friends will be in town while I'm gone so they can't babysit. It's going to be tricky.

Has anyone ever looked into boarding a hedgie? Do you have suggestions for 4-5 days of hedgie care? I've got until December to figure this out, but it's the kind of thing that keeps me up at night

I've left my hegehog for 3 days before and he was fine, I just made sure he had plenty of water in his bottle, lots of food and left a half slice of bread just in case he ran out (it wasn't touched in the end and the water bottle was still half full)

Leaving any animal alone is never a good idea. Too many unforseen things can happen, especially now with the cold weather, what if the power goes off.

Is there any hedgie owner nearby that could hedgiesit him?

I agree with Teasel's Mom..I would never leave any animal home alone without anyone coming at least 2 times a day to at least take a look at them. Anywho..I wouldn't bring them to a boarding kennel or even a vet's office. Since half the time the cost would be outrageous for them possibly not having anyone there anyway. Maybe if it has to come to a last resort, possibly you could ask around on here for any local hedgie owners that are on your area to hedgiesit? That would be if you could totally trust them anyway.
Hope you find somebody.:)

You think it would cost more to board a hedgie than a dog or cat?

I'm not planning on leaving her alone. I'd do it for just overnight, but no longer than that. It's a good idea to ask about local owners, I'll try that.

I guess it would depend..some boarding places go by weight for the dogs and cats at least, others may just charge a specific amount for the smaller animals. So then I suppose it wouldn't be that bad..for some reason I was thinking that it was going to be a while that you would be gone. I just automatically assumed for some reason:rolleyes:..sorry 'bout that.:)

It can't hurt to check with your hedgie vet to see if they can board him while you're gone. I'm going on vacation next week myself and my little guy will be stayng here at the clinic (I'm a vet assistant). They're excited to have him stay! Just ask; the worst they can say is no, but if they do they'll probably have some suggestions for you.

In the rare event that I need a pet sitter, I usually ask a family member or a co-worker. Do you know of any pet sitters in your area?
Otherwise, look at this website. These are professional pet sitters. It wouldn't hurt to take a look! In the upper right hand corner, you enter your zip code.

Badger, If you posted your location maybe someone on the forum would hedgie sit for you. I would if you lived near me.

Me too. Maybe we should start a list of people willing to hedgiesit for other members. :)
