Hi!

Well, I've banned shavings from Fluffy's cage. I had his bed and food side lined with vellux and his bathroom and play side lined with shavings. At school today I noticed something sticking out of his "belly button" and found 2 little shaving stick-like pieces. It took me a minute to get them out, but out they came. Poor little guy. Do you think I should put some antibiotic cream on him, just in case? Can you use neosporean (spelling??) on hedgies?

I use triple antibiotic ointment/neosporin on my animals, though I have not had to use it on my hhs. I did see on someones website that they say some hhs could be allergic to it. They recommend another type of creme that I assume comes from the vet.
I think the name of the creme is bacitraicin.

I'm a newbie, just adopted a sweet albino female and am researching bedding materials. What is velux? Do you have any ideas for litter box training? Tally poops in her wheel at night...what a mess :Pukey:

Velux is a certain type of blanket that doesn't frey when cut. You can get them at walmart and cut it to fit the size of the cage. As far as the wheel goes....lol....well, if you read some of the back posts, my Fluffy just LOVES to poop in his. Every morning we wake up to a wheel that has been "paw-painted" in poo. Many hedgies use their wheel as a litter box. Some are able to litter train. Personally, I haven't figured that one out yet. GOOD LUCK!!!

When I got Jake last month he came with one of those high backed corner litterboxes like ferrets use. It seemed unnecessarily deep and large for him. He just has a little hiney! He uses his box most of the time, unless he is wheeling.

Last week I bought one of those disposable aluminum baking pans. 12 x 9, or something like that. I filled it with litter (Yesterday's News) and put his wheel in it. It has worked like a dream! It has freed up space in his cage. There is still space in the pan for him to crawl in and do his business, and the mess from the wheel falls into the litter instead of his liner. This has made cleanup much easier. :applause:

Velux sounds like what I call polar-fleece....it sounds a lot easier than the shavings except for laundering the liners. Thanks for the info.
