Ok, Muzzle's loves rose hips..........I added them to her treat dish today, after bringing them home from the pet store. They are made by Kaytee, and are called "healthy toppings". Crude protein min 4%, Crude fat min 3%, Ascorbic Acid min 1mg/gram, and I would say each hip is a gram since there looks to be about 45 or so in a 45 g bag. Crude fibre max 38% and moisture max 12%. Rose hips are the only ingredient. They are very hard and about twice the size of a pea. I broke it up obviously and it was filled with tiny seeds of course. She went banannas! :slurp: She even dug around in the bowl for more and attacked it when she found it empty. She also annointed a little, but not as much as I have seen her do in the past!

By the way on the package it says that it is available in 6 other flavors......Rose hips, Banana, Carrots and Sweet Potatoes, Papaya, Pumpkin seeds and Almonds, and Mixed friut. The 45g (1.6 oz) package cost a whole $1.99 Canadian! :applause: not much risk to try a new treat! :slurp:

Anyone ever tried these or any of the other flavors? I got these at the petsmart here in Edmonton. Please let me know what you think and if anyone else has tried this.

I use the papaya ones for my chins and they love them. They come in tiny little bites so it's perfect (since I don't like it when the treats are too big).

I work at Petsmart and those healthy toppings are great....just watch with the fruit flavoured ones because dried fruit is apparently not the best for hedgies....I just bought some rose hips for the chins...I'll have to give one to Stella!!

What exactly are rose hips? You discribed them but I still don't get it.

They are kinda like a bud........like the either the start or end of the rose.......I have seen them on my wild roses, but can't remember just where they are. These ones I got are hard.......dried for keeping longer I guess, but I may try some soft fresh ones this year from my own plant.

Wow. I didn't know they had rose hip treats for pets. That's awesome. :) I used to drink rose hip tea. It's sooo good and smells wonderful. Great source of vitamin C. Can you tell us whether the treat form is different from regular rose hip or is it just same? I'd like to give my hedgie rose hip I get from natural foods store I go to. :)

Treats are just dried rose hips and that is the only ingredient and yes they are a great form of vit c. They are about 3 times the size of a pea though and very hard, so although a hamster or chin might love to chew, I break mine open with a knife and give the insides and then break up the shell into many tiny pieces. By the way she really loves almonds the best of any treat........and they are good for both humans and animals so go ahead.........share!! :slurp: I fo course break them up into teensy tiny bits just like the sunflower seeds.......good natural oils for the skin too.
