Hello..
What type of worms have the most nutrition for a young hedgie? I got my little male, Hubert, from a pet store about 3 weeks ago and he is the greatest. But.. some friends that have hedgies and have seen his picture say he is kinda small for his age... He is the same size as my friends 8 week old male..
He eats real good..excersizes more now that I have his whole room heated instead of a heating pad, and loves his worms.. Tonight he ate 6 small wax worms.. He would have eaten more if my husband would have kept handing them to him. Yesterday we gave him 2 decent sized silk worms and he gobbled them down real good..
How many is too much? And is it bad for him to have them everyday??
Do you think he will grow?? Or is he gonna be a pint sized hedgie??

Thanks for any input..

Alicia

Silk worms seem to be the most nutrious but they aren't always the easiest to find. Mealies and insects are usually empty calories though. They are high in fat and should be fed occasionally. I offer crickets and mealies once a week.
What is your main diet for your hedgie? Unfortunately with pet stores, you very well may have been mislead on the true age of your baby. Also remember that some hedgies are small! I had an almost 4 year old male that was only 230 g, where my almost 1 year old female is 625 g!

His main diet is a mix of commercial hedgehog food.. Vita craft and another that I cant recall right now... I emptied both into one container to mix them....It has dried fruit in it as well as pellets.. He likes it alot..
Youd think the petstore would say that he is younger than he is, not older.. but oh well....
Ive been trying to get him to eat some of those baby finger foods.. meat sticks, but he just pushes shavings over it..

Hedgehog food isn't always the best stuff. there are high quality cat foods that are great. I use Wellness and lots of peeople here use Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul. (CSFTCLS)

Foe meat, I feed Homer Chicken breast. I dice it up and then microwave it. And also some fruits andveggies on the side. The links aris listed are definitely worth a read. I don;t know what is in the meat sticks, but perservatives and seasonings might be too much for a hedgie. Also watch the sodium and fat contents.

The commercial hedgehog foods aren't really very good. Try and find a store near you that sells Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul, it's great for hedgies. Or just another quality cat food. Since you'll have to feed your hedgie the virakraft for now just be sure to pick the raisins out. The ones in there are huge and can get stuck in hedgie mouths. Also Vitacraft isn't very cruncy and hedgie's need cruncy food to keep their teeth healthy. I have some info about hedgie diets @ my website, http://dustyscritters.com/hedgehogs/diet.shtml I hope it can help! :) Good luck with your new little one ^_^

you can also get a pellet form of your bug source.

Mazuri is really good, we use that. i beleive you can find it at many feed stores(you will probly have to ask to order it.) you can also order it online(but its more expensive that way.) www.mazuri.com

Ive been trying to get him to eat some of those baby finger foods.. meat sticks, but he just pushes shavings over it..Vitakraft (aka Vitacrap) is probably one of the worst things you can feed your hedgie. It is loaded with horrid ingredients, has tons of things in it that your hedgies can choke on and has NO nutritional value whats so ever.(could be why your baby is small) Keep trying different baby foods until you can get some more nutritious food for your hedgie. You can also give them some of your food that you eat..meats, veggies, scrambled eggs, etc.
Good luck and keep us updated.:)

You're right. I have never heard anything good about Mazuri for hedgies either. I have heard that most hedgies won't touch it. Given any other choice, mine won't touch it.

Now for chins, mazuri is excellent.
