just curious how fast the hedgies can go. Thistle seems to just putt along, & i didnt know if she will learn to go faster with age, or if they are just slower.. (not that i am thinking they are at all as fast as a chinchilla.) lol

just thought i would ask.

She might just be getting used to her wheel. I know that it took Bosco a while to get the hang of his bucket wheel after having a comfort wheel. For a while he would just take little walks on it, now he goes crazy! He is actually able to move the entire litter tray that the wheel is in a couple inches across his cage, until it hits the opposite wall. And he isnt even that big of a boy

Quillson too runs pretty fast. Sometimes I'm scared he's going to go so fast the wheel's gonna just pop off! What really amazes me is that he can run like that for HOURS! He just goes and goes and goes!

I'm jealous of all the super star wheelers, Malachite has stopped using her wheel. I just took it out of her cage because it was basically good for nothing but taking up space.

Oh dear! How do you know for sure Malachite (love the name!) has stopped using her wheel?
Some hedgies spontaneously stop pooing their wheel and there are some nights when I'm sure Alina has used hers, but I couldn't hear a thing! Even so, I think maybe sometimes hedgies get bored for a day or two and then go back to playing with whatever like nothing ever happened.

Should mention that Alina typically uses her wheel like crazy. See sig line. (BTW, the ninja run is characterized by a stable, unmoving body and long legs that move too quickly to see. )

I know because she stays in my room and I haven't heard the very squeeky wheel in forever, which normally keeps be up. Early in the morning I get up and she is still up but is not using it. Plus before when she was using it I always found it nocked over. Hasn't been knocked over in a really long time.

She can have it back when she proves to me she uses it. :) (It is available to her during play time.)

I am sorry if this offends you but this is a hedgehog you are talking about here. Do you really think she will connect that she has to "prove" she uses her wheel to get it back.

Taking away her wheel is cruel. What does it matter if the wheel takes up space in her cage. Hedgies usually wheel in the middle of the night so just because she doesn't use it during play time is no indication of her wanting it overnight. :)
