Usually while Im up in my room, I allow my hedgies to sleep in my bed (making sure they dont come in contact with eachother of course). Yesturday when Murdoc was sleeping under my pillow, I heard him making some weird noises, almost like chipping/wimpering. I thought for sure that he had somehow hurt himself, so I scooped him up to take a look. He unballed and gave me this dirty look like "You woke me up, why?" And then started sniffing around my lap like normal.

Right now he is sleeping in his igloo, and I heard the same thing. "Chirp...chirp...chirp..." Of course the heater was on in my room, so I couldnt hear it very well and as soon as I got closer to his cage, he stopped.

Has anyone else had anything like this happen to them? Is it something I should be worried about? He will probably be going back to the vet to have his toe taken a look at (again) so is there anything I should ask the vet about specifically when/if we do go?

Is it the same chirping noises he makes when he is awake and exploring? I have heard of this before, and it was said that hedgehogs can make noises in their sleep, much like a dog will growl in his sleep. Murdoc may be dreaming of exploring fields of crickets. :) It never hurts to ask your vet though.

The noises are similar, but not quite the same. Im not sure what I would tell my vet "So my hedgie...he is making these noises..." which would be followed by me trying to imitate the sound. Im not very good at imitations, so it would probably sound like the noise of a dying moose combined with a sick duck. Not pretty LOL

My vet would probably tell me to leave Murdoc there and go and see a doctor for myself

Are these sounds consistent when he'es asleep or do they come randomly. If random he is probably dreaming. I have a nursery monitor in my hedgie room and often will hear little squeals and whines and weird noises. It is always random.

I would say if it is a consistent sound that doesn't stop you should probably mention it to the vet just in case it is something in his breathing.

They are definently random.
Thanks Nancy :)

They are definently random. I was thinking maybe he was dreaming, because they sounded like little scared chripping/whining sounds. Almost like my dog makes when she is dreaming. I just didnt know if that was a plausable explanation. Perhaps a nightmare of a giant super worm hehe

Thanks Nancy :)

Doris does this sometimes too. It scared me the first time and I woke her up. She too just looked at me...

If you're questioning it then when you take him to the vet to get his toe looked at get the vet to take a quick listen to his lungs. It never hurts to be sure and it will only take a second.

Marco sometimes growls in his sleep. He sounds like a little pit bull in there sometimes.
Since Murdoc is going back to the vet about his toe anyway, I would go ahead and mention it. Couldn't hurt to. Sounds like Murdoc has made hisself at home there. I am so, so glad that you got him.
