hello, i just wondered what everyone thought about renaming chins. i've purchased three prenamed chins and i'm only happy with one of their names, but i feel weird renaming a five year old and something about renaming a chin that has thier name on a pedigree feels strange. what do you think?

I think as long as you treat your chin well and spoil them rotten, you could call them "dirtball" and they wouldn't care so rename them if you wish. I've run out of good names so if a chin comes to me pre-named, I usually keep it.

Coming from a pedgiree point of view , I think renaming is bad.. I have had to do ALOT of pedigree research with certain lines because a chin has been renamed bred and then the two siblings end up being together and since it is a different name they assume a different chin but it is not.
I think you can have " call" name of whatever you want but for pedigree reasons the name on the pedigree should always be what it was originally.

I re-named my chinnies as soon as I bought them.
When they were born, the owners, being in a crazy rush at the time, didn't check their sex properly, and thought that they were a boy and a girl chinnies, so they named them Fievel and Tonya. A couple of days after, they realised that Tonya was a little boy, so he was renamed Tony.
My boyfriend and I didn't really like the names, and the boys seem to have rather distinct personalities that deserved to be marked by their names as well.
In our home, Fievel became Zeus, and Tony is our Hades, and their names also reflect their status in our household :D
They do not suffer from identity crisis and Hades, ex-Tony, ex-Tonya is happy that his real sex was properly determined.

I've brought home a total of 3 animals with names already given to them... I kept two of the 3, but changed one of the names... They were all from the same breeder though :)
It seems that the people who have bought babies from me have kept their names. I do have the names I gave them on their pedigree, but also their number they were born with (Say P1), so for identification purposes if they chose to change the name, they'd still have the number written down.

That's a good point Trin. A call name is great idea. You have to admit some of the names that people come up with on ped's are quite strange LOL.

this is what i've been doing. just keep the name on the ped, but call them whatever i want. It would be nice if the ped info i got had the names and/or breeder's name in lineage background. All i ever see is P1, L56 etc., but i'm not absolutlely sure if the grandparents were bred by the same person as the parents because noone bothered to make that clear. whenever i switch a pedigree over to my template, i put down who i got them from next to the name so any future kits' ped will have it marked that thier parent was bred by such and such breeder. so people can check lineage before pairing related chins.

I generally put names and numbers on my pedigrees. Some of my chins I don't mind if the people change their names. But most of the time I'd prefer that they keep them, especially with my favorite ones. It makes me sad when I see someone's changed their name, even if it's just calling them something else. My Wishbone is now "Norie". With some chins I'd rather keep them than to have their names changed, verbal or otherwise. To me it's just like changing my own name when I go visit other people. I'm usually more lenient to let new owners change the animals names if they are around 8 weeks old.
I'm just wierd like that.

i would never think to change a chins name if the original breeder thought them a favorite. if nothing more then out of respect, but who could change the name dreamsicle anyhow lena ;)
