Hey everyone,

This afternoon, Herbie died; he was 1.5 years old. Up until now he was a normal hedgehog, energetic, angry (heh), and with a huge appetite. Two nights ago we had him out running around and all was fine. Last night we checked on him and he was being wobbly (uh oh), he had been so two or three times before but only when the house had cooled down without our noticing (nothing a warm blanket can't cure), an added note is that the house was certainly above 20'C for the last few weeks.

When we saw him last night he was kinda sleeping on his side with his legs more exposed than usual, and we woke him up but all he wanted to do was go in the corner and sleep. Very odd, he wouldn't eat or drink (we noticed his water level hadn't gone down). We eventually coaxed him to start moving around and he wandered (very weobbily) onto his wheel and sort of tried running/walking for a bit. That didn't last long as I scooped him out of his cage to hold him.

We set him down on the ground and instead of eating some of his pellets we laid out, he would just kinda flop down on his side and sleep.

This was at about 2am, and so we figured we'd let him sleep and check him in the morning.

This morning we checked him and he was sort of breathing oddly (a very small amount of mucus would sometimes come out of his nose), and wasn't active at all. We brought him out and tried to feed him his favorite (hard boiled egg), and he just didn't care about it. His lower end was contracting with his breaths in a more pronounced way. Eventually we ended up holding him in a towel in our arms on the couch, while he laid on his side. Periodically it would seem he would have a spasm or seizure, but it would only last 5-10 seconds. His little legs were also just not moving, nor did he care about rubbing his nose, or tummy. He seemed somewhat alert though, as loud noises beyond our control would cause his forehead quills to stand up somewhat (mind you it was a half-hearted effort on his part).

So we rushed him out to UPEI's Vet School/Clinic and they were only on emergency duty and wanted $75 for just a check up (with a non-specialist). Now I know you can't really put a price on their little lives, but we wanted to see if anyone else would be available for a smaller amount of money (college students here).

We ended up making an appointment for 230 at another vet clinic, and around 120pm, Herbie expired. We were holding him keeping him warm and comfortable when he "flexed" his body twice then stopped breathing.

We buried him under a nice apple tree out in the country overlooking a frozen river, which we thought to be the most suitable place for his cute little self.

So we're a little baffled as to why his degredation was so quick (under 15 hours), and what may have happend? WHS seems to be possible, but it happend so quickly.

His diet hadn't changed much, the usual kitten feed and smaller hedgehog pellets that he's been living healthily on for the past 1.5 years.

Since I don't have much hedgie experience, I can't give you an answer to why. But my heart goes out to you. I am so sorry for the loss of your little guy.

I am so sorry for yor loss.:(
I do not believe this was WHS as it is a long process and they do not pass on that quickly. I do believe he may have been sick from past hibernation attempts (lowers their immune system), and got cold again and his little body couldn't fight off some sort of infection. From what you describe...some sort of upper resporatory infection possibly.
I am sure Herby knew how much he was loved and was lucky to have you with him at the end!
Rest in Peace Herby!

i am sorry for your loss. even if you did pay the 75 dollars, i doubt that they could have done anything for him. hedgehogs are exotic to this country, and the vets don't have very much knowledge about them.

I'm sorry about your guy. It's so sad when pets leave us.

I would encourage you to have a necropsy done. It would help you determine what happened. I don't know how you'd feel about digging him up but that's the only way to know for sure why he died.

The only way to know for sure is to do a necropsy, but I agree with Kerrie. It sounded like he was trying to hibernate and was affected by it.
Sorry to hear about your loss of Herbie

I am so sorry to hear about Herbie. Take comfort that you were able to hold him when he went and that he knew he was loved.

sorry for your loss. I registered today(i just found this site) because i was looking for a reason why last night my pet albino hedgehog sonic died as quickly as he did. there was clostridium in his stool, but his weight was fine, and wasnt dehydrated.
i found him in the same position, on his side, not strong enough to move. so i rushed him to the local exotic/small animal emergency vet(lucky for me there was one.) so dr. gary gave sonic a dose of baytril and told me to keep him warm. 4 hrs later, he died in my arms on an electric blacket...i now have to tell my son that a pet that he adores is now gone. we had him for almost 2 months, but he was awesome. he was VERY outgoing, and got along great with my 3 guinnea pigs hamlet, smore, and monkey.(they had their own cage)

the idea that maybe he went into a hibernation and lost some of his immune system is killin me. my son left his window open one night he got cold and my apt dropped to 60 degrees...we keep fleece in both cages so they have a snuggle blanket(we all need those, right) and when i found him he seemed fine and burrowed under the bedding under the blanket. that was about a week ago. he seemed fine, energetic, and we played with him every day. on new years eve, we were all playing in the hallway, and he was running a marathon on his wheel like he did everynight. i thought all was perfect. that was until about 2:30 pm on new years, when i checked in on him and saw him on his side halfway out of his blanket... :(

i am sorry for your loss. i know how i feel with losing sonic after only having him for almost 2 months... :nolove:
heres what he looked like. sorry to hijack your thread.
