That is totally stupid. In England they have hedgehog rescues and in Scotland they are killing them.

Well... they are damaging a 'rare' species. In the same way we would like to see the hedgies protected, the birds need to be protected for the environment's sake.

But don't get me wrong, it breaks my heart to think of them being hunted and killed. :nolove: Too bad they don't try relocating them or some other way that would let them live. :(

why is killing always the answer in these situation? I agree, they should be relocated, not murdered! It is ridiculous.

Not much to do about it right now. The article is dated May 4, 2003.
I wonder how it turned out.

My, my, my. This was just another graphic example of the silliness of man. If the purpose was to get 5,000 hedgehogs off the island, since they were paying a few jerks with dogs to hunt the hedgehogs down so they could be killed (which killing cost the Scottish National Heritage additional money), the SNH could just have collected the hedgehogs and sold them to the rescuers for £5 each (the reward the rescuers were paying for islanders to turn them in) and potentially earned £25,000 which probably would have covered the cost of hiring the hunters and dogs and left a tidy sum of money over for the SNH. This would have been just as effective in getting rid of the hedgehogs because they were flown off the island by the rescuers. Its sorta like the Viet Nam War; the US could have bought the enemy off for less than it cost to conduct the war.

Wow, really, they have banned hunting with dogs, I thought but that probably only applies to foxes and a few other animals. Its terrible, why are they killing them though, hedgehohs eat slugs and grubs in the wild, so they are really helping.

I found it interesting that it said the dogs didnt really seem to be hurting the hedgehog population but instead the majority of hogs killed were ones turned in by people.
