I know a breeder who gives hay to pregnant hedgehog. The breeder says it is for the female to get some good milk.

Is that okay ? (I'm am curious and I want to know)...

How strange! I have never heard of that. But, I am not a breeder so that means nothing. I would like to see what some of the breeders here think of this.

All I can say to this is that none of my hedgies will eat hay, they would only burrow through it.

Although when I take them outside in the summertime, they will sometimes munch on a few blades of grass and them anoint.

I personally do not think that hay would increase milk production, since IMHO, hay isn't a hedgie's regular food source in the wild (that I'm aware of anyways).

If this breeder's hogs eat hay, well that news to me!! :)

Hedgehogs are omnivores so they can eat plant material, but I wouldn't think they should be able to increase their milk production from eating hay. Hay is so fiberous! A good quality mix of cat foods and fresh foods provides protein, fat and other vitamins and minerals that ensure growth, development and in the case of a pregnant female, milk production

Thanks !

This is exactly what I think about that.
(and I am not sure that the person who does that is a very good breeder...)

I have always read that hedgehogs were insectivores.
