I am new to hedgehog ownership. Henry is about 4 months old and we have had him since he was 9 weeks. Just recently, yesterday, we noticed he has some red bumps on his snout between his eyes and on his quill line above his eyes and a little bit behind his ears. He is loosing a lot of quills right now but eating, drinking, running normally. Poop looks fine.

Any ideas? How do I treat?

I don't know anything about what this might be. You might try taking him by the vet?

If you could post a photo, that would help. Of course, if you are worried then I would take him to the vet, or at least call a vet or maybe even take photo's to a vet.

Don't have experience with this, but I was on a website and they were showing pictures of hedgies with allergic reactions to either food or something in the enviroment. There were bumps and scabs on their faces. I am sorry that I don't remember what site it was. I was surfing.

I agree with Ododad about a vet visit. Better safe than sorry. You may want to take special note of his diet and surroundings and see if you have changed anything recently. This would help the vet narrow down the allergen possibilities.

What kind of bedding do you use? I'm thinking an allergic reaction to the detergent if you use liners. Is his skin dry? Maybe have your vet check for mites.

Sometimes with Mites you will see small bumps on the nose/snout area so if you haven't already you might have him tested for Mites to rule it out.

Other than that hedgies can have allergies to food, laundry detergent, perfumes, dyes, etc... The quickest and easiest way to rule out some things is to see a vet specializing in allergies to have your hedgie tested. The best place to find a vet like this is at a veterinary school so if you have one in your area you might call them.
