Does anyone know if hedgehogs can see black light? I want to observe my hogs but they can see the red light lightbulbs I bought. It shouldn't be the color of the bulbs (they are very expensive red glass not painted). We are going to try thru the weekend but I was just curious about the spectrum hedgehogs can see in.

Very good question. I can't wait to see the answers. Sorry, I don't have an answer myself.

I can tell you that Bianca's behavior with red and black lights doesn't change. She will not come out to play in white light, but will with both red and black. I suspect you will find that they will sense you are there even when the lights are out. Bianca seems to have the same behavior with the lights out, black or red... It will be interesting to see if you have the same results.

Well, it's official. My hubbie and I turned off all the other lights, turned off the tv and turned on the red lights. We left them on until long after the girls would normally be up and running (we also left the immediate area) and no girls. Within two minutes of my hubbie turning off the red lights and leaving, both girls were out. So, no go with red light bulbs. I'll be trying with black light next.

Hmm, Both of mine come out as long as all the lights except for the TV and one light in the far corner on low are off. Then I can still see them run around.

Same with mine. They don't seem to mind a little light and the noise and light from the tv.

Mine are much more active with just the tv light too.

Most of mine prefer a dim light on with the TV. Some of them don't really care for the flashing and the dim light minimizes that.

Most of mine will carry on about their business with a dim or red light on.

Popples likes no light or tv on, if he could have his way it would be totally dark

How old are your girls? When hedwig was younger he would never come out and ran back in the igloo at the smallest of sounds. But by 3 yrs. He would come out when he heard me walk in the room (mainly in hopes of treats), and he would also, be out sometimes with the main bedroom overhead light on or off. I suspect he prefers my overhead light to be off and the table lamp on, but by the age of 4 yrs. he came out whenever pleased, whether their be tv light, bright light, or no light.
