I was sitting here tonight thinking about the different kinds of animals that I currently have in my home...
Canine, feline, rodent, crustacean, aquatic, reptile, and amphibian...
My question is... what category do hedgies fall under? I know some refer to them as rodents, but is that correct?

Hedgehogs are not rodents--the closest "group" I can think of would be insectivores--but that seems really vague.
...Now I need to know too

I found a web site that answered the question...
CLASS: Mammalia
ORDER: Insectivora
FAMILY: Erinaceidae
GENUS & SPECIES: Atelerix species; Erinaceus sp.; Paraechinus sp. and Hemiechinus sp.; Atelerix albiventris
So they are mammals. Dogs and cats are as well so I guess the names "canine" and "feline" are not the class names, but something else... more searching required.

I believe canine and feline are either the genus or the class but I can not remember which one.

Canine and feline are the "species" names. So mammals covers my dog, cat, and hedgies.
Geez... has it been that long since I was in school? LOL

Insectivore is the order.
Erinaceidae is the family.
Please browse! (http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/pictures/Erinaceidae.html) It's neat!
