I just wanted to say hi and thanks for having me. I joined this site last night and I've been anxious to read all the posts I've missed, but there are just too many.

I'm Jenn and I have 2 hedgehogs. A male named Sleepy and a female named Sophie. I also have 2 dogs, both females, named Kilo & Abby; 2 cats, one male named Jake and one female named Jazz; and one fish.

Cranky Ol' Sleepy is exactly that ... cranky! I've had him for just over a year now, purchased from a pet store. He doesn't enjoy being handled and hasn't since day one. However, when I got him, I took him out of his cage a lot and held him (in a towel), but he would never calm down. I figured it was causing him too much stress to keep handling him, as he'd just hiss and pop and jump at me the entire time he was out of his cage. So, I quit taking him out as frequently. Instead I usually wake up when he's wheeling at night and I'll sit and talk to him briefly and he'll usually stop wheeling and look in my direction while I talk to him.

Little Miss Sophie is a social butterfly. She loves attention and she loves to be out exploring and seeking attention. She is 9 weeks old now and I've had her for a week. She will not roll into a ball. I turn her on her back, and she rolls up for a couple of seconds and then she's wiggling all her legs to get turned back onto her tummy. She's only hissed at me a couple of times when I wake her up, but that's to be expected. She's a wonderful little girl. It's amazing how different both of my hedgehogs are.

Just wanted to introduce myself and my hedgehogs. I look forward to reading more threads as the night goes on.

Welcome Jenn and crew. I have a Jake too!

There is so much info on this site that you can't get through it all in one sitting. Don't be shy about posting a question that has already been asked. We love to dispense advice and share silly stories. I knew practically nothing when I got in the hedgie game 2 months ago. These people have filled me so full of info that my roommate is sick of all the "hedgie junk".

We are happy to have you. Enjoy the site.

Welcome! We here are picture junkies so post some of your babies when you can.

It is so sad that your older hedgie doesn't like to be held. It seems like you are making the best of it though. We got Doris in August and she was already 4 years old. We don't think she was handled very often and so we are going to love her and love her but someday get a baby and really socialize it.

We have three hedgies and they all have different personalities. I think it is nice that you didn't give up on Cranky Ol' Sleepy even though he wasn't open to being held, and it's good that you will go and talk to him while he is awake and wheeling so that he knows he is still a loved part of the family. Perhaps Sleepy had something happen to him at the pet store (or some other time during his early life) that frightened him to the point that he never got over it. Hedgies are solitary animals in the wild and I suppose sometimes you run across one that by instinct still wants to be a solitary animal. Good for you for keeping him and talking to him and trying to learn a way to love him on his terms.
I'm new to posting here too but my husband has been posting here for awhile and has made many friends that have helped us a great deal.

Welcome and good luck with your little sleepy. We got popples when he was 1yr. he is not the most social hedgie but we still take him out in his playpen and hope that one day will like to be with us. He is coming around.
