I got spike 06-11-2002 A friend of my brother's couldn't keep Spike and his cagemate Frost as he was getting married and wouldn't have time for them. So since i had a cage from ferrets that passed away i said i would take them.

So he dropped them off and i was in love. i had two beautiful boys to love and that empty cage i had was filled once more.
a couple months later i got Spike's son from my brother's friend as well he was 4 months old when i got him and they called him baby huey which i hated so i prompty changed his name to milo. So then i had 3 boys. They all have given me so much joy. But Spike and i had a special bond or at least i like to think it was special. he would always sit and listen to me talk to him. he'd sit on his leap n ledge and we would talk.
Everytime he heard me talking he would come to his leap n ledge i of course would always give him a treat too cus i am a huge softy.

he would come out of his cage and hang out on his fave perch my shoulder. or we would sit in the bathroom so the boys could play and he would always want to be the first one to jump up on the sink and be king of the bathroom.

well last week on thursday Milo was chasing Spike around the cage and Spike got caught in the wire and broke his leg. I rushed him to the vet and was told that surgery would be the best option for him so I said yes he would have surgery. I brought him the next day to the VCA in the area that does surgery. He had surgery to repair his leg saturday jan 22nd they called said the surgery went well and i could come pick him up. so of course i was out the door to pick up my baby as fast as i could. well on sunday he started having complications he got lethargic so i rushed him to the animal ER. I was told that he was very sick and they would do everything they could for him and told me to go home i got home around 3:30am and got the phone call at 5:45 monday morning that my beloved baby had passed away. that he had stopped breathing.

I got a phone call Monday afternoon from the hospital where Spike had his surgery from the vet i met with Dr Paster (a wonderful woman) she said she reviewed the file she got from the animal 911 and said that i had done everything i could for him i had given him 100% and no matter what i could have done he was a fragile little animal and nothing would have saved him. That makes me feel a little better but of course nothing will stop the hurt that i feel for my baby. I will miss him forever and he will always have a piece of my heart.http://www.chins-n-quills.com/jIRC/classes/applet_images/nolove.gif

That totally made me cry. I am so sorry for your loss. Luckily you still have two little boys who need their mom. Stay strong and once again I am sooo sorry for your loss.

It's always hard to lose a chin. Just know you did your best for him! He is looking down from chinny heaven....watching over you....

do you have any special plans for saying goodbye?

I have one of my chins burried in a park near the airport. I had to do it at midnight so I didn't get caught. It's a animal sanctuary park so I don't have to worry about her body being disrupted. I went in the spring after the death and planted some wildflowers. she's under a tree looking out to the river...and of course, airplanes overhead.
