I am getting my first heggie girl next weekend.. Now I have researched about them alot but pretty much have only 1 question????????? LOL Who am I kidding once I get here I will probably have daily questions!! Do you guys take your heggies places with you? Like a run to walmart or the video store? Now I realize they have heggie bags and the like but if you do take them out with you how do you keep them warm.. Is the heggie bag itself enough to keep them warm?? Also how about in the summer obviously then its very hot out (in the uppers 90's here) what would you do then to make sure they dont over heat? I hope I am welcome here I have 3 chins and participate on the chin boards and this forum has just been a wealth of information for me.. It is one thing to research but when you have a person who has been through the exact same thing it helps just a little more then all the research done.

Sorry this got so long but thanks for your time in advance..

I take some of mine places. They like to go visiting the pet stores. I think it depends on the individual hedgie. Some like going out, some do not like it at all.

I would not take one anyplace during the winter unless I had to. There is just too much risk of him getting cold especially if you take them out of their bag while visiting. That's just my opinion though.
You can use mitten warmers wrapped in a towel to keep them warm while they are in their bag.

Summer isn't so bad and as long as the carrier is well ventilated he/she would be ok. :)

I have taken Chloe several places. I have taken her to a couple of stores and to the apple festival that is held in a town nearby. When I take her to stores, I usually put her in a hedgie bag and then put that into this shoulder bag that I have. Both bags are open at the top for ventilation. When I took her to the apple festival I was planning on showing her off so I took her in a hedgie bag with a shoulder strap that I had made by someone on this forum. It works very well but I prefer having her in a regular hedgie bag inside another bag, it keeps her warmer. Chloe seems to like going places with me. At the apple festival she loved all the attention everyone gave her. Plus she got to sample some yummy treats like potatoes. Chloe is always very used to being carried around because my family carries her around the house in her hedgie bags and blankies. So, when you get your hedgie, if he/she doesn't mind being carried around, I would definatley recomend it, its a lot of fun :)

Sleepy is too cranky to take anywhere. But, Little Miss Sophie likes going out. She gets scared if too many people try to touch her, but she does love going out. A few days ago I took her out to visit a little girl. She got scared so she decided the best thing to do was take the smelliest poop ever and then walk through it so that she was smelly too and no one would want to hold her. It worked! But, to Sophie's dismay, it was bath time when we got home - lol.

Odo goes out all the time! She is usually well behaved too. Usually.
I figure in the summer, if your hot then so is your hedgie. When it's hot outside then I keep Odo in the shade, inside somewhere or in the ac in the car. I haven't had a problem with her over heating and she loves to travel. In the winter she stays in her hedgie bag until I am inside somewhere or in a heated car. She has always been a big hit everywhere I have taken her.

if you start taking them out in small increments when they're young, are they more likely to enjoy it later on? or will it just traumatize a baby? i'm getting my girl soon, and i would really like to be able to take her out and about in the future. i know it's too cold now, but later....

Jake isn't exactly what you'd call friendly. I have to give him a lot of wake up time before I try to take him somewhere. Once he is good and awake he is okay to travel.

He is also not completely litter trained. Before we go out, I put him in the tub with an inch or so of warm water. The water makes him poo, so he messes up the tub instead of his blanket. Nobody loves a poopie hedgie!

Since it is winter, I hardly take him anywhere. When I do I make sure he is really well insulated. I am not too concerned about overheating. I just wouldn't lounge at the pool in 90 degree weather with him. Just keep ventilation in mind. If your car is hot in the summer, the carrier is probably hotter.

Yep, I take Peanut me, but only in spring and summer. I made her a hedgiebag, but I need to roder one that's better and has the top closeable because she likes to climb out the top. We go to the video store, grocery store, on walks, to my friends' houses, outdoor events, on the city bus, plenty of places! I love taking her with me, and she feels okay about it as long as the bag is against me so she knows I'm there:)
