I have a question for you guys who own more than one hedgehog. My little man passed at the beginning of january this year. I am currently looking for another male. However, I think I would really enjoy more than one hog. I know you cannot put two males together. Now, what if the two males came from the same litter, would it still be a problem? I'm aware that putting females together is the better solution, however I am real worried about not being able to give them proper care because I do not have a vet around here who can do any type of spay on the girls and I am worried about reproductive system problems. If anyone lives in the Houston area and can show me a vet who does do spay's then I would be more than happy to get two girls, but I have not been able to find one. Do you guys think it would still be ok for me to get two females though without them being spayed? Having seperate cages is not an option because I do not have the funds at this time to pay for two wheels, cages, bottles, etc. But I will have a 40.5"x18"x20.5" size cage, so I am hoping that will be large enough. I would appreciate anyone's expertise on this subject.

I have heard that if you house two together, youd still need 2 of everything so they wouldnt have a reason to bicker over stuff.. I put my older female and my young female in the play pen together the other day (im seeing if there gonna be compatable to possibly share a cage) and the older one who is LOTS bigger got up on the wheel with the little one who is only about 8 weeks old...and pushed her off.. It was quite funny actually, but i saw the need for another wheel in there when they are out together..So, I figured id make another cage anyway, since I have to buy a whole nother set of stuff..

Those cube cages are rather inexpensive to make.. one set of cubes makes a good size cage.. My husband used scrap wood to make the base.. the most expensive part of it would have been the linolium or formica if we had to buy it.. (it was scrap laying around also.) And my cages are stacked so its space saving..

If you want two females to live together it is always best to get littermates. Yes the rule of 2 of everything does apply to many but I have Kei and Kesia (mom and daughter) together and they are fine with 1 wheel, 1 large food and water dish. They even run on the wheel together. Kes runs just ahead of Kei.

Males can never be together and even if caged seperately they usually can't even do playtime together.

I am sure there are vets in the houston area that could do a spay if it ever became necessary. Females don't need to be spayed to live together only if reproductive problems arise.

I know there are some other Houston people on here, maybe they can help with vet information. :)
