View Full Version : Macy's vet visit (Carboryl Powder?)

We went to the vet this morning to get her mites looked at.

The vet looked her all over, weighed her, and said she was a healthy looking hog. She was impressed with her skin and said her quills looked good. Macy wouldn't show her face (boy was she mad) and the vet asked me if I was sure she had mites, seeing that everything else looked good, and that if they weren't visable that she'd have to do a skin scraping and that sort of thing. With some coaxing, she showed the vet her little face. Indeed, she has mites.

They gave her a dose of Revolution, though only by my request (they wanted to use Ivomec.)

They also recommended dusting her Carboryl powder, which I assume is flea powder. Any thoughts or experience with this?

I would be a little hesitant about using the Carboryl powder myself. The Revolution will take care of fleas, mites, ticks and most internal parasites on a cat, so to me that would be an overkill. If it were my hog, I would give the Revolution a chance to work. I had great results with it after one dosage.
JMO though!

I was hoping someone would say something like that - I really don't like the idea of using a powder that she would be breathing in. I am sure that I would have an allergic reaction to it as well.

Thank you Paris :)

Thanks for keeping us updated on this. Little Macy will be ok, after all, she has you looking out for her! :)

No problem! Let the Revolution do its job :)

When my hedgie had mites, she got two doses of Invermectin (two weeks apart) and a weekly bath in a sulpher based dip. The reasoning that was given was that the Invermectin and the sulphur dip were intended to combat different stages of the mites' lives. (I don't remember which was which, but I think the Invermectin was supposed to kill the adults and the sulphur dip helped control the population in the meantime, or something like that.)

It is possible the Revolution works better over time, or perhaps the vet intended an approach somewhat like what my vet had prescribed-something to combat two stages of mite life.
