Well I've been through a VERY stressful weekend. I need you to send me your prayers in hoping that Rosie and her baby will be okay. Thursday morning Rosie had a baby, she was bred with Harrington for her last litter before she retired because she will be 2 1/2 soon. She and the baby were doing real well, but I could sense that something was very wrong. Trying not to disturb her and her baby too much, I kept peeking in on them at different parts of the day. On friday I had to go in for my science exam and when I came home to check on them I noticed Rosie was having difficulties again. She was pushing for a baby to come out but nothing was coming out. I gave her a little while longer and at 4ish we called our normal vet. Our vet wasn't there and she had already left to go home, they told us to call Tuffs University which is around an hour and forty minutes away...maybe a little less. We called and they said to bring her right in with the baby boy.

The car ride was very long because we hit rush hour and there was a lot of cars on the roads. When we got there we sat down and they took Rosie back with the baby. 7:50ish the doctor came out and said that he thinks he would be able to do a spay package and only have it costing $400.00-$600.00, in addition to just the visit alone which is $140.00. He also said that he needed to wait for the big time exotic surgeon to come in and also give us some idea on what was going on.

After a few hours, the vet along with the other surgeon came out and said that it was going to be an emergancy, they had almost lost her just a second ago and they could not do it as a spay package so it would probably be around $800.00-$1000.00. The x-ray that they took of her showed that she had two babies in her and they didn't look right, and that they were in anesthesia right now. We said that we were positive that we wanted to go along with it because Rosie means so much to me.

They said that it would take a while atleast 2-4 hours before they could update us and it was pretty late so we went to get something to eat for dinner. When we came back about an hour or so later, they came out and said that everything seemed to be alright and that we could take the baby to Kelly's house. Kelly at Hamor Hollow is a great friend of mine that was keeping in touch with me this whole time. She has a mother that would be able to nurse the baby boy so around 12:45-1AM we were driving over to her house with the baby boy. She was already for us and we suplimented him with some milk before we tried putting him in with Monochrome, the mother that was going to foster him. She was interested in him but didn't really seem to care that much about him because he wasn't squeaking at all. He's a tough little guy and was squirming around though. Everything was seeming to go well, so we left for our way home which was about an hour drive.

This morning we got a phone call and said we were able to pick Rosie up if we wanted to, but they would like her to stay another night. Although he said that he knows that I know her a lot better so he wouldn't feel bad at all if we took her home. So we went to pick her up and she was ged up with three different medications: Meloxicam which is a pain killer, Baytril and Metronidazole to help the infection.

It turns out when he was showing us the x-ray that there were three babies and that the babies had died early in the pregnancy which is why she was having problems. They started to rott in her uterus and caused a major infection. If we hadn't have taken her when we did, he said she wouldn't have made it at all. She's at home now and we're keeping such a close eye on her, its crazy. It also turns out that the cost would be more than they expected and than we expected...its $1,300.00. My parents weren't too happy because they had to help me pay for it because I couldn't afford it, so now Im in a major dept with them.

Im just hoping that Rosie will be okay and that the baby boy will be although its very unlikely that he will survive, although it supprised me to hear that he is still alive today doing wonderful so far. Monochrome wasn't too sure about nursing the baby but today kelly noticed that the baby was finally under Monochrome, even though we weren't too sure if he was nursing, it looked like he might have been. She's going to be checking on him again and handfeed him, which she has been doing through the night. If by 6 he still hasn't nursed on Monochrome Im going to be going back to kelly's to pick him up and handfeed him myself. Im just hoping you all will send your warm wishes for us. Thanks so much and keep your fingers crossed. For those of you who dont think something like this could happen to you....I would think twice and always trust yourself if you think something is wrong with your pet, take them to the vet.

Oh no Lauren! I wish you the best of luck with Rosie and baby. I know how important your hedgies are to you! Thank you for taking the time to tell this story- I hope it will make people realize that there are ups and downs for breeding our little quilled ones, even if you do have experience like yourself.
Take care!

Oh Lauren, I am so sorry all this has happened. Of course my prayers are with you. I pray for all little hedgies everywhere every night and tonight Rosie and her little boy will get the special mention.
This is one of the very reasons that I refuse to breed hedgies. I don't have anything like the experience that you have (without your immence breeding experience you would not have known when to seek a vet and probably would have lost Rosie) and would not know what to do in case of an emergency. There was a thread awhile back aimed at some who were getting hedgies and breeding them right off without know what they were doing. I hope the same people read this thread. So many things can go wrong during breeding. I don't want to discourage anyone from attempting breeding, but please, if your going to breed then research as much as you can and if possible have someone close by who knows what they are doing and can help in case of a horrible emergency like this one comes up. Also make sure you have an experienced vet close by.
I am so sorry Lauren.. All my prayers are with you.

We just got back from Kelly's, the baby wasn't nursing on Monochrome....Im handfeeding him along with my dad when I can't :| Rosie is doing so so, I need to give her more meds around 7:30ish. She drank some for me, still hasn't really eaten. Handfeeding the baby again because he's squeaking...putting pictures up afterwards.

I agree with you totally Billy. I think many people think breeding is a money making proposition and Lauren can certainly tell you it isn't. I have sold 4 babies and have yet to make up what I lost on Cinders vet bills.

Lauren you know I am praying for Rosie and her baby.
Hugs from us all here.
