I noticed some of the other recipes had honey or molasses and figured the banana in this recipe would be a healthier/better? alternative to hold the ingredients together. :)

Ingredients:

1/3 carrot (finely grated)
1/3 of an apple (finely grated) - including the juice
1/2 cup of oats
1/2 cup of chinchilla pellets (blended into a powder in a food processor)

1 large, or 1 1/2 medium bananas (mashed)

Method:

Put the first four ingredients together in a bowl.
Add about 3/4 of the mashed banana and mix well.
The mixture needs to be moist and hold itself together.
If it doesn't mix easily, and feels too dry - mix in some more banana.

Cover with saran wrap, and leave in the fridge overnight (up to 24 hours).
This will allow all of the moisture from the fruit to soften the pellet mixture.

Pre-heat the oven to 250F.

Roll the mixture into treat-sized balls (or cookies), and place on a non-stick baking tray.

Cook in the oven for 1hr 15min (to dry the mixture out).

Check to see if the treats are done by cutting the largest treat in half. If the middle is darker than the outside, it hasn't properly dried out, so put them back for another 15 - 20 minutes.

Enjoy! :D

This recipe has been taken directly from the UK forum www.chinchillas-unlimited.co.uk. http://www.chins-n-quills.com/jIRC/classes/applet_images/applause.gif (credit where credit is due :))
There are a few more recipes for healthy chinchillas treats on the forum too - some of our chinchillas have tried them with great enthusiasm ;)

I have a question, specifically about this type of thing. Now I know treats are to be enjoyed, but aren't they also for nutritional value? If so, does cooking them take away nutritional value? I'm not specifically asking about this recipe but as a general question about all cooked recipes. Thanks

I know this is kinda a weird question, but My grandma makes cake( for humans:)) with fresh bananas and it causes the cake to mold if not eaten in a few days. Could this be the reason that the original recipe calls for molasses or honey instead?? just wondering cause I am out to the store soon to go get the ingredients:););):)
